New Sigma OS Contemporary 17-70 2.8-4

Dxo rate this new version very high, very exciting for 5200/7100 owners.

A fast os, macro(ish) light dx optimised zoom on the 7100 essentially a 17-140(in crop mode), 2.8-4, very cool for the size.

Some reviews and discussion here, very interesting option, combined with the new 70-200f4(Nikon) and the crop options, very flexible pairing.

Yes, hopefully just as affordable as the one it replaces.

Indeed, an interesting option and looks to be definitely better than its predecessor.  Perhaps a tiny bit softer in the far corners than the 16-85, but much improved. At a street price of $500, a relative bargain.

Note that this lens, and apparently all of the Sigma 17-xx DX zooms, use a 7-bladed iris which may result in polygonal bokeh rather than circular.  This is a criticism leveled at the 16-85, which also uses a 7-bladed iris.  The FX range and the best lenses will use 9 blades.

Another interesting option will be the Tokina 12-28 f4 DX lens, which gets far enough into the standard FL category that it can be very effective as a close quarters walkaround lens.  It will replace the well-regarded 12-24 f4 VII.  Personally, the extension into the standard FL range is worth far more than a 10mm bottom end for most purposes.  10mm, even 12mm, requires careful composition to not look overwierd.
