Lens Question - replacing the 18-55mm kit
Feb 27, 2013

Hi All,

I own a 600d with the kit lens and a Canon 55-250 which i use for a bit of everything,

I recently returned from a trip to europe and must say im disappointed with a lot of my shots, due to the nature of the crowded cities its very hard to fit everything in the frame, ie: churches etc.

I am thinking about selling my 18-55mm kit lens and replacing with the canon 10-22mm and the canon EF 50mm lens. I would keep the 55-250 lens for zoom shots but feel most of my shots moving forward would be landscapes or portraits.

Is this a good move..? or will i be missing something if i replace my 18-55 with the 50mm and 10-22mm

Any advice is much appreciated.

Ben

Before your trip did you have issues with not having a wide enough lens?

Are you planning on taking many more trips?

Buying gear for something in the past doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Selling your 18-55 IS wouldn't even cover the cost of a 50mm f/1.8.

So, based on your concerns I'd get the EF-S 10-22 now, and keep the 18-55 IS.

See how that works out, once you've used those lenses for a while, you can decide what your next step should be.

For example, later you might consider the 40mm f/2.8 as an alternative to the 50mm f/1.8.

I have a 600D with the 18-55mm IS.  I also have a 10-20mm Sigma w/a.   The temptation to buy a super wide angle, I know, is great as some of the shots it produces are breathtaking, but of course it is pricey.  I also have the F/1.8 50mm and it is a no-brainer; everyone should buy it, but since you already have that focal length I would plough all my dough into the w/a.   The 18-55mm IS is not a bad lens.  There have been at least four incarnations of that lens, with improvements each time, both optically and with the added IS feature.  Whatever you decide, good luck with your photography!

Thanks for the tips so far guys,

in answer to some of the questions: yes i will be taking many more trips,
Travel is what i live for  and capturing the places i go my number 1 priority.
I did see a need for a wide angle prior to the trip, however here in Australia most of the shots are further away.

so... if i had the following lenses with my 600D can anyone see a hole?

EF 50mm

EF 10-22mm

EF 55-250mm

Moving forward i will be taking landscape and a few portraits of my partner and I in our travels

Re selling the lens, i have just ordered a 50mm online for about the same price as a friend has offered me for the 18-55mm so i would really only be out of pocket for the 10-22

Thanks again,

Ben

I'd keep the 18-55 kit lens, as you'd get little money for it. Insted, use the "difference" to get a cheaper wide lens such as the following....

Tokina 11-16mm f2.8

Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 or Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6

For traveling, a single 15-85mm lens is all you need in my opinion. Before you spend the money on 10-22mm, check out if you really like the perspective of shots from the ultra wide range (10-15mm). Also look at the shots you have taken in the past to find out if you will miss the range 22-50mm.

ok great,

Thanks again to all the replys,

for those that have the 10-22mm would you say its your main lens for landscape or would you still say the range between 25 and 50 is valuable.

i tend to think i work at the ends of the 18-55mm and dont think id miss the focal lengths,

if not ill sell the 18-55 and it will cover the cost of my new 50mm prime

Thats exactly my thought too.

Yesterday i bought a replacement for my 18-55 kit lens.

I went for the 15-85mm because of the wide angle and a little zoom.

To me this seems to be the ideal walk around lens for vacations.

I did lots of shooting for over a year with a 10-22, 35/2, and 55-250.  I would not recommend this.  First I often needed better middle range focal length choices.  Second I was changing lenses constantly between the 10-22 and 35/2.  For my style of shooting the 10-22 was just too wide for general use.  I next got the 15-85.  I highly recommend this lens.  15mm does not sound much wider than the 18mm kit lens but it is.  I rarely need or carry the 10-22 and the 35/2 is even more rarely used.

Don't sell the 18-55
In reply to bendarmody, Feb 28, 2013

I have the 10-22 and I've tried the 15-85.  The 10-22 probably is my least-used lens, although occasionally when I have it in the right place at the right time I'm happy that I have it.  The 15-85 is a good lens from all reports and it's a nice focal-length range but it's expensive and surprisingly heavy.  I didn't find it that much better optically than the 18-55 in the focal-length ranges where they overlap although I still think about buying one from time to time.  But in any case, the 18-55 is worth so little and it's such a nice little walkaround lens that it seems a shame to get rid of it.  I was in Australia last November and I had the 18-55, the 55-250, a 70-200 f/2.8L, and a 400 f/5.6L, with a T2i and a 7D.  I'd say I took a third of my photos with the 18-55 lens.

Just get the 10-22mm and keep the 18-55 IS.  Add the 50mm f1.8 if you want.

The gap between 22 and 50mm is just a bit too big sometimes. You could perhaps fill it with a 35mm f2.0  (instead of 50mm f1.8). Sometimes, when you don't need the UWA, 18-55 IS is a better all around. But I agree, European cities, the 10-22 is on my camera most of the time. But from time to time, the 18-55 IS does go on, especially when you want to take pictures with people, when you tend to perhaps take a semi-wide shot, and then zoom in a bit - swopping lenses tends to be too time consuming during travel. The 18-55 IS is small, light, inexpensive, so it's easy to take it along for travel and you won't gain much from selling it.

I make do with 18-55 because I don't want to spend on lenses for APS-C only. I shoot mostly landscape and for the rare situations I need a bit wider I just stich a few frames together.

I would consider looking into manual focus lenses.

I used the m42 SMC Takumar 50mm f/1.4 for quite some time and then eventually made the switch to a Nikon Nikkor 55mm f/1.2. Immediately thereafter, I sold my Canon 50 1.8. I later went on a trip and took my 18-55mm and couldn't stand the quality of the lens. Although I have kept it, my two primary lenses are now the manual focus Nikon Nikkor 55mm f/1.2 and my Canon 70-200 f/4L IS.
