I could care less about the next one, I just want it released so the price on the current OM-D will drop.  The EM-5 is a boatload of camera, and more than enough for me.  But I don't want to pay full freight for it.  So I'll wait.

My hope is that the OMD camera that is on the poster for coming out this year will be a camera above the E-M5 and the E-M5 will continue onward for another year.  I have just over 10,000 photos on my E-M5 since buying it in June.  I am getting to know the camera.  Here are the things I would like to see for a camera above the E-M5:
1. Slightly larger body to improve ergonomics.
2. Being able to use the smallist AF box and also the histrogram or clipping warnings at the same time.  The level at the same time as the other two would be a real nice bonus.
3.  Improve continous AF and AF tracking to make action and BIF photography easier
4. Custom SCP/Liveguide so that the things I don't change much don't slow me up moving to the items I do change a bunch.
5. Easy to get to bracking and one shot bracketing.
6. Being able to kink the AF box to the exposure meter.

Just to name a few items off the top of my mind.

Then again if the next OMD camera is one below the E-M5 I would not care what it has since I wouldn't be buying it.

What I most look forward to is an end to these endless threads about what features the next OM-D should have.

Amen to that. It is beyond tedious. RM

- not one bit larger or heavier than the current one

- drop that ugly "mirror" box or better: put a flash in that box

- flip/swivel LCD

- significantly faster AND reliable AF (continuous and tracking)

- 24 MP

- better noise performance

Implement all that wishes and I'll deeply regret that I placed an order for a Nikon D800 today!

I do agree with all the "upgrade" that you have in mind EXCEPT for the larger body for ergonomics. I like the size of the current EM-5. For me, it would be better to have a "removable" grip ala EM-5 with access to the battery. Maybe one that's similar to the Fotodiox designed for the Nikon V1 (see pix) where you can access the battery door to replace the battery without removing the grip. This way you can make it bigger for better ergo or keep it smaller for portability.

What I would like to see on the newer model is to have a:

  • better sensor for better IQ and higher ISO performance for night shooting (sensor technology keeps getting better every year)
  • higher reslution EVF
  • faster focusing and higher fps in RAW+JPEG
  • built in RF remote control of at least 100' with intervalometer & BULB shooting
  • gorilla glass or similar scratch resistance OLED screen
  • dual SD memory slot that you can program to have RAW on one & JPEG on the other or as an overflow where when slot 1 is full then it will go to slot 2.
  • built in high speed wi-fi that can transfer RAW+JPEG to a computer/laptop

Just my wish list

Not much.

Keep the size as is.  Don't want a bigger camera -that's why I gave up my DSLR in the first place.

Better EVF.

Swivel LCD - but if that adds too much to the weight, the existing flip screen is fine - same comment with an included flash.

I'm perfectly happy with 16mp, but they will likely continue the MP race.  I'd opt for more DR high ISO performance.

Longer battery life.

this is a fantastic list and pretty much the same as mine. the body really only has to be slightly larger, that was worded perfectly. it can be smaller than an om-d with a grip, just add a little bit to the right places. a little bigger to put a built in flash perhaps, though it is of little importance to me.

and of course, hopefully some incremental sensor improvements such as lower noise, better DR, etc...

A lower base ISO, let's say ISO 100 or 80 ... for even cleaner pictures.

Yup, base ISO 100 plus 1/8000 shutter. Built in flash.

That's my list.

If it is to be Pro-Level Body
In reply to pppp, 3 months ago

Hi,

If it is to be a "pro-level body"

1. larger more glove friendly buttons +/- slightly larger body as necessary

2. wheels/dials that lock or have more resistance to spontaneous movement

3. dual SD slots

4. ability to focus classic 4/3 lenses better, without issue compared to E5

5. larger more powerful battery (may require slightly larger body

6. concerned that MP NOT go above 18MP (diffusion limits, one needs to be able to shoot at 5.6 or 8 w/o difusion softening

7. move on/off switch to top deck.

8. Built in GPS (UNLESS IT LIMITS WATER SEALING or build quality)

9. Feel free to remove "art filter" and similar "enhancements"

10.  Also I agree with Skeeter (above) base ISO to 100 AND min shutter speed 1/8000

IF NOT a pro-level camera", most of above can be done without increasing size and can do without numbers 3, 4, 5 and 6, 8, 9, 10.

Just my $0.02, personally I would not mind a GH3 sized pro level body that could handle my collextion of LARGE 4/3 lenses (12-60, 11-22, 8, 50, 150, 14-35, 50-200) and I believe there is room in the OMD line for several body sizes/applications.

Unless Olympus stops at just two OMDs... I have a feeling you aren't going to be happy.

I'm very satisfied with my E-M5. I'm slightly envious of the ergonomics of the GH3, which, to me, seems a lot better than the Olympus's, but it lacks the style and petiteness ...and the IBIS

I don't really expect any change in sensor performance from the next OM-D, unless they do something slightly mad and put an oversized sensor in the body ...which would be awesomefor other aspect ratios than the 4:3. *drools at the prospect of 1:1*

Besides that, this is my (considerably truncated) wishlist.

- A larger and higher resolution viewfinder. The one we have is excellent, but any improvements would still be a huge deal for all of us who still mainly use the viewfinder. Combine that with eye-controlled focus points too, please.

- In-body CA correction for Panasonic's lenses. It's a small thing, Olympus.

- Sensor-shifting magic. Like the Pentax and/or Hasselblads. I wouldn't use it much, but gimmicks like these sell cameras!

- 1/8000 second shutter time. Real ISO 100. Faster flash sync. This is needed. Please.

- Better and more flexible video modes. The camera seems artificially crippled when it comes to video.

- Better tethering/wireless control.

- Focus peaking and Zebra striping. It's what people want.

- Rethinking of the buttons and interface on the backplate. Room for improvement there. Less fiddly buttons in better places.

I don't know the math for how many MP is ideal for lenses to adequately utilize a range of f-stops, but for someone who shoot a lot of landscapes, the above is a concern for me.
