X10 owners switch to X20 or not? Tell us...

Hi folks,

Many X10 owners like myself have been curious about the upcoming X20. However, not everyone will drop their X10 and replace it with an X20.

My work-flow does not include RAW, therefore functionality relating to Fuji JPEG engine is paramount.

Also while the viewfinder on the X10 comes in handy occasionally, I'm using the LCD most of the time for my shooting style.

Some of you require sharp images with acceptable DR range and reasonable noise level for printing purposes. However, I do not have my images printed larger than 8x10" and I'm therefore perhaps less demanding than others.

The EXR SN functionality of the X10 keeps the noise level in check for my flash-less indoor shooting, while 6Mp in M size is sufficient for my printing requirement.

Some of the X20 features would be nice to have, especially minimum Shutter Speed with Auto ISO in Aperture Priority Mode, but the current EXR functionality is more important to me.

Therefore, I will not purchase the X20.

So, tell us what are your intentions and reasoning?

Cheers,

Luego

Luego, where did you see that about minimum shutter speed?

I find switching one camera model up as useful as burning money. The X10 still does what I bought it for: It makes very nice photos for a compact and comes in handy when I don't want to carry my D600.

Still, I would love X10 owners to buy an X20. Somebody must keep the economy going.

Still in the process of consideration. Recently, the viewfinder of my X 10 has turned unsharp. I have just announced it to Fuji. If they want to charge me for that (the one year warranty period is over, but the 2 year legal liabitlity period - which however concerns the shop where you bought the item, not the producer - is not), the my affair with Fuji has come to an end.

If they don't, then I will expect further tests and sample photos. The new features, like fast AF, viewfinder information, new sensor and engine, sound promising on paper!

Surely what has been said so far about X20 sounds great.  I would love to have better low light, and improved resolution, so I am quite interested to see what the actual comparisons are when it comes out.  Realistically, however, it will probably boil down to money, and the issue that the added cost for me would not be worth the improvement.  We'll see.

What I am telling myself is to - Wait for the X30 (there, I said it)

Luego, where did you see that about minimum shutter speed?

I believe the Fuji guys mention it in one of their videos, but I have to search for the link.

However, here is a link that confirms this feature by one of the current X20 owners.

Perhaps you should insist that Fuji covers the repair free of charge. The last time I checked Fuji confirmed a two year warranty period here in Canada.

Good luck and let us know how it went.

I do use the viewfinder a lot, as I am often in conditions where it is impossible to see the LCD, apart from the other benfits of the OVF.

Because of the frustrating limitations on X10 aperture/shutter speed I find I sometimes over expose (because I am unable to see indications on screen that I am ouside permissable limits, or hear the beeps because of background noise).

The new OVF should fix that, and provide a nicer experience.

However, whether on its own it is enough to buy another body is doubtful.  I will wait for more comparisons to confirm relative IQ.

Just to confuse the issue I have just bought a Nikon V1 kit with 10-30, and 30-110 (couldn't resist at $399).  Maybe that will become my regular 'compact' outdoor travel kit, and the X10 will do nicely for a less intrusive indoor item.  I will do some IQ comparisons when I get my hands on the V1 (it is in USA and I am in HK until June).

June sounds like a good time to decide on the X20...any bugs hould be identified, and initial teething problems sorted.

So, no decision until June/July

cheers

Tom

For X10 owners that contemplate to purchase the X20, you might consider the implication when shooting in bright daylight using DR400. The X10 can shoot DR400 with ISO100 in M size, while the X20 requires a minimum of ISO400 for DR400.

Can you live with the increase in noise level?

Funny that you mention shutter speed limitations.

Aperture f stops limit higher shutter speeds:

1/4000s to 30s* (at f/8 and f/11)
1/2500s to 30s* (at f/5.6 and smaller)
1/2000s to 30s* (at f/4 and smaller)
1/1250s to 30s* (at f/2.8 and smaller)
1/1000s to 30s* (all apertures)

The X10 lens performs best at f/4 - f/5.6. So you might hit the shutter speed limit pretty fast during bright day light.

The X20 will be worse when shooting DR400 requiring minimum ISO 400.

Congrats on your Nikon V1 purchase. I heard only good things about it, especially the AF speed.

Cheers,

Luego

It will be hard for any compact to improve on my X10's image quality and looks. A hybrid or electronic viewfinder might have been persuasive, but still not likely. I'll save my photo money for a bigger sensor, perhaps when the XE-1 price comes down to reasonable levels.

I don't like the white X20 label on the front of that camera anyway. But, I do expect the X20 to be an otherwise-improved Fuji camera, and I welcome that.

What I've seen so far is superb, and if I didn't already have an X-E1 I would be upgrading from my X10 to the X20.

X20 for me...
In reply to Luego, 3 months ago

I don't have my X10 anymore so I thought I'd give the X20 a shot for the improved VF, PDAF, much improved video of 1080p60, focus peaking, etc.

The sample JPEGs we've seen so far from the X20 have been a bit of a mixed bag.  The X10 has very nice OOC JPEGs, and of course, for EXR users there is no reason at all to upgrade to the X20.

That said, if you do a lot of night shooting, or have been bitten by the way the X10 renders light sources (also called "orbs" or blooming), the X20 does seem to have more or less completely resolved that issue. If you search "Fujifilm X20" on Flickr you'll find a bunch of night samples fomr DigitalBear and you can see what you think.

Some of the X20 samples I came across today are quite nice. They at times almost look like mini X-Pro1 images in that they are detailed, sharp, with bright colors and good DR.  But they don't look over-sharpened like some P&S camera JPEGs can be (Perhaps it's the X-Trans technology with no OPLF that allows them to be highly detail and sharp, without high digital sharpening).  I don't know but they are nice, natural looking images.

That said, I don't think the X20 is an urgent upgrade as the X10 is still an awesome camera, but for me, as the X10 is only $100 less than the X20, I thought I'd give the new model a shot. I wouldn't mind also grabbing a used X10 at some point for the EXR goodness, until then, I've ordered an F600EXR from Amazon for $125, brand new from Fuji and I will have a play with EXR until my X20 arrives.

Anyway, you can find the samples I mentioned above and the link to the complete gallery here. There are also a couple of cool new effects filters like Miniature Filter that the photographer uses to great effect (see link below).

Hi Markus,

As I've said before I'm a newbie for Fuji and to this forum.  The X20 will be my first Fuji camera and I'm really looking forward to it!

Since you're an old hand on this forum can you advise me who would have the best hands to show off this camera.  Can you name 2 or 3 Fuji photographers on this forum who I should take careful notice of their work?

On the Panasonic forum there were about 2 or 3 really good photographers that made the LX5 shine!  I would imagine this forum has got theirs too.  BTW, I still have my LX5 and its 18mm conversion lens which I think would complement the Fuji X20.

Cheers

I'll hang around for some time until it eventually begins to be discounted, got some other things in line for my disposable income right now.  For me, my only regret about the X10 is the blank OVF:  So the new finder overlay is just what I had in mind.  That they've added an X-Trans sensor and new EXR processor like its big brothers (and added a soft focus preset in the Filters) and a chrome body, OK, sure I'll get one.

Otherwise, I'd feel so LEFT OUT once everybody starts ripping it to pieces and condemning Fujifilm for its very existence !

All the Bust,
JW

Nope - at least not anytime soon. I'll rather keep shooting my X10 until it falls apart, which might take another while or two; after all it still looks and shoots like new. The biggest reason to switch would be proper RAW support in LR but my 2€ct guess is that too won't happen to soon. Ah well ...
