Sell my SEL24f18Z for a SAL 1680Z - am I mad?
Feb 21, 2013

Hi

I take most of my shots during daylight and portraits of my kids and usually just use OOC Jpegs. I have had the CZ24 for a while and had some great shots but sometimes have to get physically closer to get the shot I want (or crop) - I initially bought it because it was the best IQ E mount lens.

I already have an LA-EA2 adapter and now considering selling the CZ24 to buy the SAL16-80 and adding a bit more to get the Sony 35 for low light since it is more appropriate for portraits. My questions are:

Would the 16-80 at 24mm be just as good as my CZ24mm in terms of colour/sharpness? - if so it would give me a useful zoom range with no loss of IQ; this is my current persuasive thinking...

Would the Sony 35 be 'worse' IQ than the SEL24 (I know there is much love of the 35 on this forum)

Hope this all makes sense.

There's a greater difference between focal lengths than IQ between the 35 and SEL24, APPARENTLY. There's always going to be people who claim otherwise but i'm guessing differences are negligible.

The SEL35 might not be as sharp as the SEL24 in the corners wide open. But there is no need for this for portraits. I think your plan makes perfect sense, I have not gotten the SEL24 simply because that length is that valuable to me so I got the SEL35 & SEL50. My only suggestion would be if you want it for low-light and general purpose, the SEL35 is perfect. If you want it mainly for portraits, I'd also consider the SEL50.

If you decide to sell, I would be interested.  I shoot mostly landscape and the 24 is a great focal length for my purposes. I live in the USA. Thanks

I'd love to know more about the quality comparison too, I wish there was a tool that can compare test shots between different lens at different FL.

But anyway, since you are taking shots of your kids isn't it pretty obvious SAL is the way to go anyway because PDAF?

I don't think there is a correct answer. I have them both. The 24mm  is a nice lens of known quality but for taking JPG's OOC of children and other general topics it makes sense to me trade for the 16-80mm.  As long as the light is good, you gain flexibility and fast autofocus.  You loose low light (get a strobe if that is a problem) and possibly some artsy-fartsy narrow depth of field stuff.

Out of a hundred random subjects under mostly good lighting conditions, I would go with the 16-80mm 75% of the time.  You won't see the difference unless you are specifically looking for wide open bokeh.

The NEX system is weak in mid-range zooms right now but they should be announcing a new one in a few months. Their might me a native 16-80mm with stabilization and faster auto focus, which would be the best solution.  It will cost more than $999 though.

Not mad at all. The CZ16-80 was my walk around lens when my primary camera was an A700. Since I have a NEX-5N, I primarily use the A700 for studio and flash work. As mentioned previously, the 16-80 should work great in all situations with adequate lighting (natural or flash).

Isn't the 1650 better walkaround lens? I think it has superior IQ?

From what I have read, the IQs are very close. The obvious advantages of the 16-80 are wider range and much faster focusing. Main disadvantage is size.

Why would it have faster focusing? The 1650 has SSM?

You have to try the lens under the conditions you are going to be shooting.  Sometimes screw drive is faster - sometimes SSM is faster.  In general, you probably can't tell without instrumenting the shuttr. Screw drive is perceived to be slower because it is noiser.

Thanks all for your replies. I think that I will go and sell the CZ24 and get the 1680. I went to try  out one in a shop today but they didn't carry any in stock. Instead I tried out a Sigma 30 f2.8 and although the build was worse (which doesn't bother me too much for the price) I was very impressed by the sharpness. That maybe a better alternative to the Sony 35mm and about a third the price although it is f2.8 vs 1.8. Have you guys any experience of comparing those 2 ?
