Nikon D7100 will kill Panasonic GH3
|
Very similar weight and size, superior sensor with 1.3x m4/3 crop mode at almost 16 megapixels and faster FPS. Long reach is about the same as m4/3 with the same FL provided that the lenses are of comparable quality.
Lens size/weight advantage of m4/3 isn't always applicable. Nikon 55-300mm DX is about the same size/weight as Panasonic 100-300mm. Same can be said about Nikon 35mm F1.8 vs Pana 25mm F1.4.
Recent video test of D5200 at EOSHD suggests video capabilities of Nikon cameras improved a lot.
OVF, autofocus tracking, better DOF control and significantly better sensor (assuming it's D5200 sensor), all for $100 cheaper than GH3. What's left there for GH3?
Micro 4/3 has its advantages - a combination of compact bodies and lenses. It's a system that can be worn on a belt, a body plus 3 lenses can fit in couple of belt pouches. But it's true only if the body is compact, and that's why I chose m4/3 system. I can pay for compactness, but GH3 is far from being compact. Even GH2 wasn't. These and G5 are just DSLR-sized cameras without advantages of DSLR.
Now, how would justify GH3 being $100 more expensive than D7100 while being inferior in almost any feature that matters?

Yes it will kill it, blow it out of the water, grind it into the dirt. All GH3 owners should sell their M43 systems and buy this camera ASAP and Panasonic should immediately cease trading - many thanks for this valuable information.

The Nikon D7100 will also kill all previous DXXXX models, which is the way it is supposed to be. Do you expect Nikon to come out with an inferior model?
And do you sell your phone, pc, car .... as soon as someone announces a new model with equal or better specs?

No it won't. It is a very good camera only viewing the specs, I like it. But the GH3 addresses to other kind of users.
This is a camera for the Canon Nikon "war" not to compete with Micro 4/3. Neither to compete with other mirrorless cameras.

It's about planning long term investments into some camera system. About choosing right system based on priorities. IMO, if compactness is priority then m4/3 is the right choice, just GH3 doesn't belong to compact camera camp. If everything else is a priority - APS-C will eventually beat smaller format.
Obviously, next generation of cameras are expected to beat the previous generation, there is no question about it. But there are things you can expect about system formats progress in future.
2 Shirozina - no, I don't expect GH3 owners to move into APS-C because they already chose their system. I expect them to stick with GH3. But, I think it's good to know where camera systems stand.

I never quite understand why people feel compelled to post things like this.
These are very different products. I'm not sure how you can say that a body that weighs half again as much as the GH3 and has lenses that are much larger and heavier (your example notwithstanding) are really in competition......
The Nikon seems like a nice camera. If I was shopping for a camera system today I am sure I would look at one. However, I am equally sure that I would not get one, since if I wanted a larger system at all, I'd skip the aps-c and just go full frame. Otherwise, M43 hits the sweet spot of size and IQ for my purposes.

Exactly. It's a puerile attempt to....I don't know, to get attention maybe. Entirely pointless.

As a Nikon FF user along with a GH3 user the camera looks very good , however the main advantages of mFT remain while the GH3 is the largest of the mFT models it is still a third lighter than the D7000. Though the real size advanatge is in the lenses , while are a number of excellent relatively small and reasonably priced primes for Nikon such as the 50mm F1.8 g and the 85mm F1.8g , almost all the high quality zooms are FF design and sized . There are also factor such as fully articulated LCD , AF speed when using video etc that shift the advanatge to the GH3. Both cameras I am sure will be more than capable of delivering excellent results, its good to have choice

To be fair to the OP there are literally thousands of posts here comparing mFT to other systems . Many along the APS is going to die line . Obviously those type of posts are always favorable to mFT and thus welcomeÂ

For me the GH3 makes so much morse sense than the Nikon or the OMD. Perfect size and 2x crop factor. The Nikon has nothing to do with why some of us got into mirrorless, the OMD has the wrong body for some us, enter the gorgeous GH3. GH3 takes legacy lenses and all with glasses adaptors.
All the best.
Danny.

I would skip DX format too, If I want to get an DSLR it will be something like the Nikon D600.

DX makes little sense
In reply to micksh6,

In the same degree of humour as the OP...
Apart from the price, there is almost nothing going for the D7100 compared with the D600 or D800. When people invest in Nikon gear who wants to limit themselves to DX-specific lenses? How many really good ones are actually in this group anyway? If you are saying that the weight difference between the GH3 and the D7100 is nothing then that between the D600 and the D7100 surely is nothing too.
In fact the OP's post highlighted two glaring shortcomings of the GH3, the size/weight and price. The post is provocative but the issues are real.

I don't think the GH3 price is exaggerated regarding the quality and features, the same for the OMD. About the size any Micro 4/3 camera will be smaller to carry considering the lenses size. Nobody uses a camera without a lens. The DSLR cameras always have to use bigger lenses.
Anyway the important is each one choose what they need and mostly concentrate more on talking pictures than on gear.

Don't you worry. Olympus OM-D will kill Nikon D7100.
It has magnesium alloy body, faster fps, is much smaller and lighter, has EVF that smashes OVF, has tilting OLED touch-screen versus the laughable fixed LCD, has the ON/OFF switch at the bottom right corner!, has a detachable flash unit, has a dramatic tone art filter and the most powerful reliable and all mighty IBIS! Also it looks like a real camera, not like a black box. Try to beat that!

And regarding the price - Canon 5D Mk2 was on sale refurb with warranty for $1500, I think. Not much more than GH3.
