D 7100 6 shot Raw Buffer IMO D400 still coming

After a bunch of searching found the D7100 buffer specs. to me 14 bit 6 shot buffer means a D400 has to be coming, http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/dslr/d7100/spec.htm either that or canon will have a banner second half of the year.

With all due respect - Is a larger buffer (from Nikon's point of view) enough reason to market a D400 @ $1,800.00 between the D600 and D7100? Or do you suspect they would release it above $2,000.00?

If the rumors are true about canon and a DX 10fps camera and in the 16-1800 price range, then Nikon would have to come out with the D400.

I would pay 2k for a D400...with the right specs.

I'll likely buy one for warblers...

Early morning in the marshes too Stuart. But an action camera this is not.

Yeah its reason enough for me to go to canon I shoot wildlife professionally and that buffer is a none starter. I paid $2150 for my D200 and $1900 for my D300s so yes there's lots of room, almost every wildlife shooter I run into is using a D300s or 7D.

By that time the price of the D600 may well be in the neighborhood of $1800.00

I hate to agree Jim that i'll end up with one for that same reason. I read something the other day that Wildlife and Bird Photography is the fastest growing outdoor pursuit in North America, Nikon can't have there heads buried for the requirements of a larger buffer for this crowd

thats 14 bit, just wondering

Anyone know what it is in 12 bit raw, or 1.3 crop? For 1200 this may make a nice addition to my D700.
Its loaded for evrything else, 51 pt, should be razor sharp, nice feature set for the money.

Something that doesn't make any sense is how small the 1.3 crop 12 bit buffer is, less then my 5 year old D300s but similar mega pixels.

14 shots in 12 bit 1.3 crop

still terrible, slower then my D300s and if they haven't fixed the SD cards being slower then CF it may feel a lot slower

Only 12 in lossless 12 bit...

Again, not a problem for spring songbirds, waders in the early morning etc.. But this will be a temporary specialty body for me. Looks like both the D300 and D300s will have a little brother.

Thanks, I don't shoot a lot of action, would work for me. I can see where action shooters would pass on this. Fast fps means d300, D3, D3S or d4. Maybe their will be a D400 later, its too big a hole for Nikon to ignore.

There will be a D400. The buffer size is intentionally crippled on the D7100. Even for me, a non-pro action photographer I will have to shoot JPEG (33 shot buffer) most of the time. No nature/sports professional can make a living with a 6 shot RAW buffer.
Personally I'm pleased as punch it's only $1200. Hey, at least Nikon crippled the right feature. I just don't understand why they announced this one first. A D400 must be around the corner.

No, they can still add things like AF-ON, CF card, Qual, ISO , WB on the left dial ... less polycarbonate on the body too.

And all of those specs are under ideal settings and conditions. Shooting a D600 that's supposed to get 16 14 bit lossless NEFs actually gets around 13 with NR, ADL, picture control, etc. turned off. Not a spray-n-pray shooter so I haven't messed with finding out what else needs to be turned off to maximize the buffer but there's definitely options that cut into real world capacity.

for those who demand RAW and coming home with a couple thousand BIF pics to scroll through like myself but I realize not everyone's like me lol ...I'm not into RAW anymore for birding as I've moved away from enjoying coming home with 1-2000 raw pictures with 10-15 frames of a given bird only to pick one out then spending much time editing...I can certainly understand the disappointment though.. the big plus in the 7100 is the 51 pt focus system but like many it's not the good old tried and tested D200,300,700 or 800 body...that buffer size baffles me...I shoot both Nikon and Canon and for the $$ the old 7D with some good glass is hard to beat in Dx...hey you have an excellent website there Stusteelhead!! My compliments

Does anyone know why buffer sizes are limited at all really? In the big scheme of the cost of a camera, the size, cost, and availability of the memory with the smartphone boom are all trivial. So what is the bottleneck here? I realize they may have kept this to a certain size for this camera, but its a common thread for really all moderately priced cameras.
Its not as though they lose something by making it bigger and charging us a little more. They could just keep the buffer relatively smaller than the next model up, but increase the size of the whole line up I would think. Unless there is something from an engineering standpoint that holds them back.

Means nothing of the sort, you as well as everyone else that lives for these silly forums. Manufacturers will still have you eating out of their hand all the way to the bank.

Live for these silly forums? I'm a professional photographer reading up on the latest offering and realize that this camera leaves room for a D400, if you consider them silly why are you here on a camera gear forum?
