Woot... wondering why they are updating the A57 before the A65 or A77. A57 is a great camera, let's see what the A58 brings that could tempt me to update.

Probably won't be an A65 successor first off, and the A77/7 series cameras are always on a longer replacement cycle. That's "probably" why

Your thoughts on the pictures/specs? What you expected?

+1.

People would mostly either buy a A57 or the A77.

No, that's not why, Sony want to give a answer to the Nikon D5200, that's why, and it seems again like a rushed out camera with no great improvement, even worse, smaller LCD, no improve EVF just the usual marketing stuff more MP !!!!!

If true, they should have called = A38 !!! maybe it is the A38 instead of the A58 for the announced price ??

OLED EVF
In reply to cgarrard, 3 months ago

That seems to be one of the improvement features. That is nice.. and could get me to change from my a57 to the a58. Hope the a58 retains the a57's high ISO performance. Nice to have it if/when needed.

Also, lens micro-adjust would be nice, but didn't notice that.

People shouldn't 'rush' to judge the thing before the actual announcement is made, IMO. I see a lot of whining about the LCD and EVF with no actual facts to back it up. If the 20MP is 1 stop better, how is that 'just more marketing MP'..?

I agree.  If they can keep the same high ISO performance (or improve) then the OLED EVF may tempt some people to get a Sony rather than your usual Canon/Nikon's.

Micro adjustment would be great, but not holding my breath on that. Too cheap a model.

20MP with a 1 stop improvement sounds promising, so does an improved EVF and remote control tethering (even if it lacks WiFi).

Either way, it seems the upgrade will be a cheap one for A57 owners purchasing in the past few months, at least. $100-150ish?

Guess I am getting really old, but what is an OLED? I know what EVF is, but that's as far as it goes. Thanks for any info.

The first SLT cameras had an LCD viewfinder. That is like most laptops: you have a light source behind a screen with dots which can change their transparancy and let more or less of the light from the light source pass through.

The new viewfinder is OLED. That means that each dot on the screen is a small LED which can be turned on and off (and everything inbetween). Those screens are usually regarded better. They have at least two big advantages:

  1. They do not polarize the light as an LCD screen does. This means that you can wear polarizing sunglasses and still view the screen at any rotation. An LCD screen will go black at some angles when you rotate it.
  2. They can make better blacks. An LCD screen dot can only be as black as its ability to block the light allows. With OLED, you simply turn off the LED for that dot.

The A65, a77 and a99 were so far the only SLTs with OLED viewfinder so this is a first in an a5x.
