Nikon D7100 announcement?

Nikon Rumors is reporting a big Nikon Press conference next week, and a D7100 announcement.

Interesting to see if this pans out. Could be good news!

Curious about sensor and AF system. Likely the same as the one used in the D5200, but AF could be the updated 51-point used in the D800. And also fps rate. Those items will indicate if Nikon is coming with a pro-level DX (D400) or keeping it a 3 body lineup (D3n00, D5n00, D7n00).

I agree, Renato.  The AF system and frame rate of this new camera will likely be very telling. I'd like to see it with the 51pt AF and 6fps.  That would be an excellent upgrade while still leaving room for the d400.  Time will tell.

Exactly what I'm curious about as well.
And now, the waiting game begins.. at least now we know it's just a few more days until -something- DX is likely announced! Hopefully it will be high end.

I guess your saying if the specs are less impressive -  then a D400 is obviously coming out (with better specs). Are we sure about this analysis? Or are you saying if the specs are impressive a D400 is coming out. The former seems to make more sense. If the specs aren't too impressive there's gonna be a biger market for a D400. Unless you think people will want the D400 mainly for the more study body and the "more controls" on the outside of the camera.

D5200 sensor is almost a certain... I don't know what Toshiba's fab capabilities are, but since it's not currently being used across different camera companies (Sony, Nikon, Pentax) my guess is that they would need to spread out production across multiple models at the minim in order to lower cost per unit.

Also... Yeah, if it has the 51pt AF system then that'll be it for the D400. Even in that I won't mind, except that I'd take umbrage to the plastic portion of the frame around the mirrorbox. Even with the partial metal frame, my thought is that since this a load bearing part of the camera, it should be metal, like on the D300.

I think so to,  but from what I have seen of the  D5200 image quality so far it is not a real step up from the 16MP of the D7000, and actually may be a step backwards from the IQ of the D7000 at higher ISOs.

A 51 pt AF system would be the only thing that might make me trade my D7000 for a D7100, but  I doubt Nikon would put a better AF system in a DX camera than in their FF D600 at this point. The camera markets  have changed a lot since the D300 was first introduced, so I don't expect Nikon will continue to pursue this very limited and shrinking  high end DX market any longer. In other words, D7100 yes, but no D400.

I agree, I bought a D-7000 6 months ago with the full knowledge it could soon be replaced by such a camera.  But odds are that camera is cramming more pixels onto a APS-C sensor, possibly performing the same or worse with the higher MP count for noise, and let's not forget the probable larger RAW size.  I shoot RAW a lot and the last thing I need is my hard drives filling up that much faster on a wedding or studio shoot.  My camera is for work, not pixel peeping.  The 'D-7100' would have to offer something truly amazing to get me to bother upgrading.

I would be really surprised if they gave away the crown jewels, the D4's AF, with a camera so far down the pecking order. I wish they would, as I hope this will be my next Christmas present but I doubt they will give it much that the D600 doesn't have.

I am not so sure about the D5200 sensor, I think that sensors have always moved down so far, D300s gave sensor to D90 (didn't it?) then to D5000; D7000 gave its hand me down sensor to the D5100. The D5200 has moved up towards the D7000 with its metering and AF so the D7200 needs some more differentiation and an even better sensor would do that very nicely, without overtaking the D600.

I know I cannot wait for that announcement.  But wait I must.  Oh, the humanity

Dunno.  It's hard to say what they will do these days.  They put the 39pt AF in the d5200, so it wouldn't be much of a stretch to see the d7100 have the 59pt AF, especially if they use the same sensor.

I am not so sure about the D5200 sensor, I think that sensors have always moved down so far, D300s gave sensor to D90 (didn't it?) then to D5000; D7000 gave its hand me down sensor to the D5100. Yes, in the early years, the sensor was deployed in the more expensive camera first. But, that changed with the d7000, when it got the 16mp sensor and the d300s didn't. The d300s was deployed about a year earlier, so maybe the sensor wasn't ready by then, but it was a big change, never the less. Now we're looking at the 2nd iteration of the d7000, subsequent to the d300s, with no rumors of the d400 in sight. So, maybe they've decided not to replace the d400.  Maybe the d400 is perceived as a threat to the d600.  Dunno.  But, if they aren't going to replace the d300s, they need to put high FPS and 51pt AF in the d7100.

I agree with you on the d7100 sensor. It should be a better sensor than the Toshiba in the d5200. That would likely mean fewer MPs, better noise performance, higher speeds, but maybe not.  These days, it's easier to predict the winning lottery numbers, than predict what Nikon will do.

One thing for sure, a lot of people will be interested in the specifications of the new camera.

I am very curious about the specs of the D7100. Will it be a D7000 upgrade, or will it be the D300s upgrade, or something else? But there is no way I will buy one right away, even if it is a true D300s replacement. Maybe after 6 or 9 months I would begin to consider it. Too many hassles and issues with D800 and D600 early models. It has been saddening to see how some passionate photographers have lost much of that passion while battling with Nikon. I do not want to risk that core of joy and pleasure until I know the D7100 or D400 are worth the risk.

FWIW my current well loved set of Nikons are the D700, D300s, D90, D40 and D3200. All of these are reliable, fun and sing with good glass. Can you blame me for not wanting to jump too soon?

Your D40 is the star of the bunch and you know it.

and yet i know several people with D300s and D7000s that would buy a D400; I don't know a single person with a D600 or anyone who wants one.  The high end DX market is shrinking because there's no new product for anyone to buy

What if everyone is wrong? D6000, not D7100!
In reply to virtualkyr, 3 months ago

Perhaps DX is deader than people realize... and we're getting a D6000: full-frame entry-level DSLR in a D5200 body - that's FF without the focus motor and extra controls.

If it is DX, it better have Hybrid AF (main-sensor PDAF) for Video like the Canon T4i, EOS M, Nikon 1, NEX 6-R, or it'll be obsolete at launch.

If such a camera is indeed introduced at say $ 1000-1200  and it has a bigger and brighter viewfinder than the D5200, I would buy it immediately and use it with the following primes : 28mm 1.8 G, 50 mm 1.8 G and 85mm 1.8G. I predict it would be a bestseller. I don't see a very big market for the D400, if Nikon introduced one at $1700, would they sell very well when the D600 is priced at $2000 ?
