Half year old 35mm Summicron Wobbles?!

I just found the the front portion of my 35mm Summicron ASPH (from the hood to aperture ring) is loose and wobbles for about 1/16th of an inch. Noise can be heard when I shake it. This lens was bought new and only half year old. I can hardly believe this is happening... given all the fame to the great german engineering.

Any suggestion on how to repair it? Many thnx! I live in Washington DC. Any local good repair store?

Since you bought it brand new and live in DC, take it to the Leica store there. They can probably help with warranty repair if applicable.

By the time I bought it, it was out if stock at bh and other online stores. So I bought it from a store in china, which I don't think is an "authorized leica dealer". Not sure the warranty still covers in this case

Hmm.. That does complicate things I suppose.

There's a few reputable repair specialists in the US, but not in DC.

a disclaimer:  I have never handled this lens

still I have some experience and wonder what is going on

the hood is detachable & such will wobble at times

Leica's hoods are notoriously costly & in many instances have seemed a design afterthought, most infamously in the hood for the 28 Summicron ASPH

the hood for the 21 Elmarit ASPH f2.8 seems flimsy as well

both get the job done however, but lack the elegant execution I expect with Leica

if the barrel wobbles, you may have purchased a counterfeit lens from that unauthorized dealer in China as I have never heard any complaints like that for this lens & sadly counterfeiting high end products is a major industry in some circles

I wonder what price you paid

Re: Half year old 35mm Summicron Wobbles?!

Talk to the service folks at Leica. Call them.

I've never understood why people who have a problem with a nearly new piece of equipment don't just call the service and support folks for the brand of equipment and ask questions there first. I've had issues with new equipment, of whatever kind and price, too. Often bought in a similar way. A call to the authorized repair center has always taken care of the problem in ten minutes, regardless of whether I bought the item from the US distributor or not.

Of course, if I haven't bought from the US distributor and the warranty is restricted to geographic region, I expect to have to pay something for warranty repairs. That comes with the territory. If you're not willing to accept that risk, you're better off placing and order and waiting for stock to arrive.

Not a problem

You'll find Leica lenses can do this. I have a hunch if you shoot some photos you'll find the image quality is fine. I've got a 35 Summicron ASPH right here and the front section is quite tight and free of play. I'd suggest you send it to Leica in New Jersey to have them look at it. Leica does not worry about where you bought your lens....and there are no bootleg modern Leica lenses. So it's not a problem. While it's true some of the lense hoods are expensive and over designed that is not true of the one for the 35 Summicron. Now the 28 Summicron...that hood is one of the worst!
