Help me choose Sigma 15-500 or Sigma 70-200 OS + 2x Ext
Feb 10, 2013

Hello,

Preparing for Africa again.

I have sold my Sigma 10-20 and Sigma 135-400mm.

My plan is to buy a Sigma 150-500mm OS (825 EURO) + D5100 (400EURO).
Will it be smarter to buy a Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS + 2x Extender (about the same total)?

I am looking forward for your suggestions.

Many thanks in advance.

PS:
- No, I am not willing to spend more money (1200 EURO is limit).
- 135-400 performed fine but I looking for extra and/or reach/sharpness/aperture

If 1200 is your limit than you are in luck. get Sigma HSM 50-500mm OS it is far better than 150-500 and for trip like this far better than 70-200 and TC. All you need besides that one is something on wide zoom and 50mm 1.8 and you are set. If 150-500 is 825 and you get one it will be a waste of 825. Reag Lenstip.com test on both lenses and see for your self. BTW if you will look to sale 50-500 after you will not loose more than 200 so its low "rental" cost.

I second the comment to buy the 50-500 OS. I've had mine for one year now and it has greatly exceeded my expectations in every way. It has become my walk-around lens (using a Black Rapid strap). The lens is very good at 7.1 and incredible at f:8. The OS is better than any of my Nikon VR's and it's ability to shoot near macro at 200mm (hh) is the clincher.

In my quest to choose between 2, a third option has been presented!
The Bigma 50-500!

Nevertheless looking back I have rarely used my 135-400 outside Africa.
Although this years visit to Africa will not be the last, I am very attracted having a faster & 70-200 lens at home.

In the mean time I have found the following:

So I now tend towards the Sigma 70-200 + 2x extender because:

  • In all my tours to Africa the 400mm proved to be enough
  • Compared to my 18-200 I will have a faster and sharper lens which I will also be using at home.
  • I'm just an enthusiast, not earning money with my pictures nor earning enough to spend more.

Many thanks for the reactions so far.

Has anyone other examples of the Sigma 70-200 with a 2x extender on 200mm?

And of course, other suggestions are welcome as well

Asking helping between two, you presented me a third option!
Nevertheless a viable one;

Thanks!

btw: the "cheapest" 50-500 available in the NL is above 1200.

Avoid the 2 TC
In reply to MarcNL, Feb 13, 2013

The most effective TC's are the 1.4's, almost all 2 TC's aren't that good, they soften the image too much. Both lenses you are considering are excellent lenses, but don't go beyound 1.4 TC. So if 70 - 200mm isn't doing it for you with a 1.4 TC, your decision is made.

By the way, I've been using SLR's and DSLR's since 1973 and like you I bought 2 TC's, nope they don't work, not really.  I even have a Tamron 2 TC that a buddy bought and didn't like and gave it to me.  About the only thing I use it for is to shoot moon pics.

I think if you are looking for quality long, the suggestion of the 50 - 500 OS Sigma is a good one.  Realize on a crop camera its longer than 500mm.

I would have to agree on avoiding the 2x....  I never used mine for a moon shot MAYBE it would have worked...

I shot with the Sigma 150-500 for a over a year.  I upgraded to the 50-500 wanting a little more versatility.

I don't know how Sigma made the 50x  THAT much better, but it is by far. Yes a few more coins, in my experience WELL worth it.

I have the 120-400 OS. Is the 50-500 stabilized, & how does it compare to the 120-400 OS? Thank's in advance.

Two models of 50 - 500
In reply to happysnapper64, Feb 27, 2013

There are two models of the 50 - 500, the first without stabilization, the second with apparently "decent" stabilization.  The second model is consider a snort sharper, both are good lenses.  In fact as one reviewer commented, just for the 500 end alone with stabilization compared to 500 primes (which are a tad sharper), its a bargain.
