How do I set up my 50D for back button focusing?
Feb 8, 2013

Could someone provide the steps required to configure my 50D for back button focusing?  I've not been able to set it up correctly.

Thanks

Funny thing these cameras. I have a 7D and use Back Button because camera is FAST. Good for Birding

I also have a 50D and prefer the Front Button on it. Good for People/Landscapes/Macro.

Google--how to set up 50d for back button focusing...

Good Luck

In the Custom Functions menu, C.Fn IV, option 1 controls the behavior of the shutter and AF-ON buttons.

Options 2 and 3 are used to enable BBF; option 1 makes the AF-ON button an AF Lock button.

It has the AF-On button, so there shouldn't be anything to configure.

Well, presumably if he wants BBF, then he wants to remove focus control from the shutter button. Otherwise what's the point?

Since the 50D has an AF ON button, all that is required is to remove focusing from the shutter button.

Menu

Orange Camera Tab

C.F.IV:Operation/Others

1 Shutter button/AF-ON button

3:Metering start/Meter+AF start.

This way when you press the AF-ON button the camera will focus the same as a half press on the shutter button.

A half press on the shutter button only starts metering.

If you want to use the * instead of AF-ON for your back button focus

Menu

Orange Camera Tab

C.F.IV:Operation/Others

2 AF-ON/AE lock button switch

1:Enable
* is your AF-ON button and AF-ON button is your exposure lock

0:Disable
* is your exposure lock and AF-ON is your focus start

Personally I shoot a lot in AI Servo and don't want to have to continually hold the back button, so I leave AF start on my shutter button, but, configure my AF-ON button as AF-OFF. This way I start focus with the shutter button, but, can stop it at anytime with a back button press. I find this is works better for me.

To configure your camera like that

Menu

Orange Camera Tab

C.F.IV:Operation/Others

1 Shutter button/AF-ON button

1: Metering + AF start/AF stop

Menu

Orange Camera Tab

C.F.IV:Operation/Others

2 AF-ON/AE lock button switch

0:Disable
* is your exposure lock and AF-ON is your focus stop/suspend

That's exactly what I'm after, I want to focus with the back button only and have the shutter button on for taking the actual shot.  I will be using this technique for sports photography; continual focus with the back button and shot with the shutter release.

Thanks
