Panasonic GH3 Made In China, Am I Being Old Fashioned To Be Disappointed ?
|
Having bought several Lumix, LX3, TZ3, TZ10, TZ30, FZ200 and had zero problems am I just being out of date to be put off by seeing the underside of GH3 stating Made In China ?
I always expect the top models of bodies and lenses to be Made In Japan, and find it genuinely reassuring.
Though having been through this with AV/Hi-Fi with fairly expensive ( to me ) receivers { Anthem }, thought it was Made In Canada, nope, China, Blu-ray Players { Denon } thought Made In Japan, nope, China, and loudspeakers { KEF } thought Made In England, nope, China, and finally my TV { Panasonic } thought Made In Japan, nope, Czech Republic.....and having experienced no problems....maybe it doesn't matter anymore ?
Even so it seems strange my FZ200 is Made In Japan, and the GH3 is Made In China.
I want one, but its putting me off, am I just out of date, perhaps I'm a dinosaur, harking back to Deep Purple.
Thing is top Canon / Nikon bodies are still Made In Japan, and they must have good reason to forego the cost benefits, no ?

China has emerged as the manufacturing plant of the world. They are capable of manufacturing goods of the highest standards all the way to total junk. What is key is whether Panasonic has a good quality plan that they have fully implemented. The Japanese are very good at managing quality so I wouldn't be concerned about Panasonic equipment that has been manufactured in China.

I was amused by the label on a Lowepro Messenger Bag:
"Invented in California/Fabricated in China"

I must admit that I kinda thought the same thing when I noticed it was made in China. But based by the build quality and performance of the camera now that I've had it for a couple of months, I have no more concern over this.

You'd think their rep would mean something, but it's a numbers game. Everything is made with tolerences. Some are made well (close tol.) some not (loose tol.) like the cars made Friday after a liquid lunch (burp!). If you get a good one your happy, if not, ouch! Read the forums and you'll find pros as well as amatuers befuddled by poor performance of exspensive brand name gear. After 50 years of playing with light I've accumulated a lot of paperweights and have learned the golden rule. "If it's junk dump it, your time's priceless." Always have a decent backup (even if it's your wifes, just don't tell her).

I remember after the war imported goods from Japan were considered Jap junk,
then later it was Taiwan junk,
then Korean junk,
& now, Chinese junk.
Whats next?
For sure, I know from experience, autos from the UK were junk in the 50s & 60s.
We currently drive two cars made in Korea (07 & 10) & have only had to deal with worn out brakes & windshield wipers.

True, I agree with that.

Interesting, these are my lenses:
12-35mm...made in Japan
100-300mm...made in Japan
45mm macro....made in Japan
25mm 1.4 ...made in Japan
35-100mm....made in China
Only my most expensive lens and the GH3 are made in China. Normally is all the way around.

They probably copied that BS from Apple. In that case, invented in Cupertino. Where's stuff like Invented in East New York and made in Havana?

I am old enough to recall the days when we laughed and expected junk of things Made in Japan. Your idea that things made in China are inferior reminded me of that period. My GH2 says Made in China, and can't think of anything I have bought with higher quality... Al

The quality control will be the same in China or on other different country. Japaneses want to maintain the good quality.

These days some of the highest quality, multi-million-dollar yachts are built in China. A $1,300 camera? So what?

But my question is, why cant they make an electric can opener that will last longer than several months?

I'm sure they can, but your Walmarts and such go there to get the cheapest possible product.
