How's PDAF on the SEL35F18?

Just wondering if it's working well for people who downloaded the firmware update. Can't wait to try mine out. Are you using AF-S or AF-C?

I thought PDAF isn't supported on the SEL35F18 yet, no?

Unfortunately really not that impressive. Seemed like it was focusing but the images were blurry. Was just in my kitchen with my gf walking towards me so obviously very unscientific. Ill keep experimenting but so far just really not impressed with afc on this camera even with pdaf.

So you think PDAF is just a gimmick that doesn't really work on NEX?

this is away from real life... enough contrast and light.. close distance to subject; close distance to second subject and several inches between subjects.. of course the focus will look amazing, but its not

Coming from the NEX-5N to the NEX-5R, Sony's PDAF is a disappointment.  In real-world use I see virtually no improvement in AF speeds from the firmware-upgraded 5N to the firmware-upgraded 5R and lenses.  Yesterday's firmware update did not change that either.

this video has just stopped me from selling my NEX-7 and getting an NEX-6. The new firmware doesn't seem to make that much difference at all.

I'll wait for the real NEX-7 sequel/replacement.

Thanks though

Really? It seems significantly faster to me, say 25% or so faster.

I am really glad with the PDAF on the SEL35f18. It is quite a bit snappier. But I never found the SEL35f18 to be slow. I tested the SEL50f18 a month ago and that lens really felt sluggish. I returned because I got really annoyed with it.  So I am wondering how the SEL50F18 performs now.

I also tested the Sigma 30mm and I also found that lens to be slowish. I got used to the 18-55 kitlens with PDAF and I was really disapointed with the performance of the Sigma 30mm and SEL50.

When the SEL35 came out it felt good, even without PDAF. Now with the PDAF it is just that tad bit faster.

If I had a nex 7 I would not buy a NEX6 for PDAF. But I am glad I bought the 5R over the 5N

The Sigma 30mm and SEL50 seem to be slow in low light, where PDAF does not function. In good light they are sufficiently fast.

Correction: I forgot that the Sigma 30 cannot be enabled for PDAF, anyway.

Hi

Can you put a link to the firmware update you got?

I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I bought my sel30f18 a month ago. It has firmware.01, but he PDAF pattern is visible, so I assume it is working.

How can this be tested?

IIRC, PDAF wasn't about AF speed, but more about AF accuracy in specific situations (moving subjects).

I,m sorry, didn't see that. I will refrain from posts on this subject.
