Olympus are "stupid". Why make silver lenses?
|
Olympus make silver cameras, and black cameras, or black & silver cameras. The OM-D is a great example.
But then they make silver and champagne colored lenses - which don't happen to go with their flagship OM-D.
I cannot understand any logic in this? It's not even cheaper to produce.
Surely black is cheaper, and has the benefit of going with both silver and black camera bodies.

Strange, my silver 45mm f/1.8 works perfect on my black OM-D! I even think it looks good!

That is one of the reasons on my list why I only shoot Panasonic for MFT's.

A company in financial difficulty duplicates lens manufacturing requirements needlessly, produces a pestilence of compacts, yet can't run to a timely E-series update. Was it really worth 'updating' the m.zuiko 75-300?
I too see no sense in their approach. Surely, a handful of clearly-differentiated products is the way to go.

Nothing against SILVER, but I would like a BLACK OPTION

I have no problem with SILVER lens. My big beef is there is NO OPTION for those who prefer BLACK. Why not offer both version? Many Panasonic lens come in either Silver Grey or Black version.

While I agree from a financial point of view that manufacturing a single color of lenses makes more sense. I would never say my silver 45 f1.8 looks bad with my E-M5, if anything, it gives it a style it doesn't have with the other lenses and yes I do like it. But more importantly, is the image quality and that meets my needs. I am not saying that they should go with some pink lenses in the future however, because then it might be a little too much.
But look at Canon and their better lenses, aren't they white ? Well, I think that is what Olympus means to do, many of those silver lenses are top quality lenses.

Without a silver lens, how else do you plan to kill vampires?

Black or silver options are available...

...for the "consumer" lens - presumably "photographers" have different priorities than worrying about the colour of the lens

Sorry, but over here in the US of A saying "Olympus are stupid" sounds stupid.

Look and feel is relative. Maybe black-Silver is not for you but it's okay for me/others or vice versa. Does it affect your photo?

The reverse is true for Olympus too, some lenses come only in black like the Olympus 9-18 M43 Zoom, and the new 70-300 M43 Zoom. What blows my mind is when they offer a special black version of the 12 mm at $400 more!

That is quite a good point actually. Never been bugged about those white L lenses.

I think aesthetics can affect the desire to pick up a camera - most definitely.

Yes, the more cynical could give that price hike as a reason for producing only silver lenses.

I don't care about the color

As long as they take picures, it's immaterial to me. I have the 12mm and the 45mm and don't think twice about the color on my black OMD. I actually like the silver, but the color of the lens serves absolutely no role in my descision to buy one.
However, charging extra, way way extra, for a hood is just a rip off. Thankfully there are third party options that work well and are reasonably priced.

Then I suggest pset riorities and criteria because there are alternative lenses like Panasonic, sigma and other lenses. I buy the lens on quality and result as my criteria - the Oly 12mm, 45mm and 75mm produced great pictures. I can buy a black Sigma but inferior photos and this is photography so the criteria is obvious. But again that's me so you might loss the desire to pick up a wonderful 75mm and buy black alternative instead but produced average or poor photos. Your choice great photo or aesthetics?

Some of the most prized classic lenses made by Zeiss for Hasselblad were all silver, and many professionals use them on their black Hasselblads without being embarrassed.
Perhaps, since Olympus considers the OMD line a 'retro' style design, they have decided to offer the non-black version to appeal to that theme.
I think that either color if lens is fine, as long as the lens is good. I actually like the color of the 45mm f/1.8 as it makes the lens stand out a bit -- which it deserves to:-)
God Bless,
Greg
