Advertisers, why don't they treat us like grown-ups?

Lovely bit of advertising telling us nothing in this Olympus newsletter that's just come to my in box

This is the description of the new 75-300

  • More zoom power, smaller size
  • Autofocuses faster - never miss a shot
  • Stabilized in the PEN body for even sharper pictures

At first I thought it was a comparison with the Mk1 but from what I have read on this forum that isn’t right

So it would be nice if Olympus, sorry the advertising agency, added “than what” to every line

  • More zoom power (than what), smaller size (than what)
  • Autofocuses faster (than what) - never miss a shot
  • Stabilized in the PEN body for even sharper pictures (than what)

Why can’t advertisers give us facts

Of course they could have included much less of a rip-off. I suspect that could have even been a good selling slogan

Their is always some small thing to complain about Olympus and this is from Olympus users. Never hear complaints from Panasonic users.  So now Olympus users complain about advertising, hard menu set-up, cracked OMD led screw whatever, too small need vertical grip.

Using Panasonic is so much easier and straight forward.  No confusion.  This is perfectly clear.

The approach to photography of many of us is so childish, that the smart company executives might think that publicity focusing on children customers is the way to go to market their cameras.

Not sure about that, my dig was at advertising generally not specifically Olympus.

I'm sure Panny have some gems out there somewhere

Do you really want honesty in advertising?

Olympus "This new cosmetically updated version of the lens was created and assembly moved to China to make it somewhat cheaper and to compete more with the Panasonic 100-300".

Or Coca Cola "This gut rotting sugar drink tastes nice and costs bugger all to make, so buy it".

Or McDonalds "This food causes obesity but is sugared and fatted sufficiently to taste nice and it makes us very rich, so buy it".

Or Apple "We have cheap labour making these toys and we have so much money we don't know what to do with it, but keep buying our stuff as we want to soak up all the world's currency"

Insert your own truthful advertising here.....

"Why can’t advertisers give us facts?"

because if it's not accurate the company will be sued or tons of complains. Did you read that Subway was sued because the footlong is not really 12"? That is an example 'fact' that consumer will chase for accurateness, publicity or money

I took a class in advertising a long while back, and found that 'basic' advertising is directed toward a fourth grade (US primary school) level of comprehension. I don't think it's changed much from the ads I see

And the trouble is we all have that inner child (the fourth grader)...we have got to say no to our inner child sometimes...stop spoiling them.

Olympus users are probably more discerning and have higher standards...

Though it seems that some Panny users (at least those who always have something negative to say about Olympus) are perpetually in a grumpy mood - their camera's fault?
