Canon Financial Statement for 2012

Canon is still making profit but it is significantly reduced. How long it will continue to be profitable if they don't upgrade their sensor technology is anybody's guess.

news flash for you .. canon makes more than cameras. business sector segment (copiers, scanners, printers, etc) performed poorly last year.

imaging had sales of 16 billion USD - an increase of 7.2%

Oh gosh, that link to their financial results says that sales of EOS cameras has increased. Nothing at all about depressed sales due to out of date sensor technology.

I suppose we can thank Nikon for the green tinted none focusing left side D800 or the grease splattered sensor of the D600 for such good results of the EOS division.

Did you even bother to read the report prior to posting this comment? On page 3, under the heading results by segment, they comment that cameras are doing relatively well with revenue from that segment being UP by 7.2% and profit being relatively unchanged. The report would seem to indicate that the Imaging segment is the one segment that they are doing well in.

I doubt that (outside of a few pixel peeping camera geeks that hang out on a few internet forums) the vast majority of people purchasing this gear are even aware that there are differences in the various sensor implementations and what the implications of these implementation differences are. This way over hyped sensor difference amounts to roughly a 4x increase in noise in the deep shadows (and then only if you are shooting at base ISO). Outside of DxO style measurements and some specially concocted test scenarios specifically designed to demonstrate the differences the images produced by these cameras are virtually indistinguishable.

I definitely wouldn't recommend that you look at Sony's results, it might lead you to think that their sensors really stink since they have hemorrhaging money for the last few years.

Do you even bother to read Canon's financial statements? Quote: "Demand for interchangeable-lens digital cameras continued to display strong growth across global markets ..."

You posted the same nonsense 3 months ago when Canon released their third quarter 2012 financials. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/post/50130145 and you were completely wrong then as well, the linked statement said : "Demand for interchangeable-lens digital cameras continued to realize robust growth in all regions ..."

Please, stop trolling.

Don't discourage him! Once I saw his virtually identical post from three months ago I knew I would get a laugh when I saw he had made exactly the same mistake of not reading (or understanding) the report.

In their main camera market, dSLRs and lenses, Canon had about a 15% market share lead for all 2012 over Nikon, in Japan at least.  So they are doing quite well in cameras.  They are also the top P&S camera seller.  They are on top, dude!

looking at amazon ..

1. 12 out of the top 20 DSLR by sales are canon. 4 out of the top 5.
2. Canon has held spots 1 through 4 for months.
3. canon has all 4 model variants of the 5D and 6D bodies in the top 20 (no other manufacturer has full frame cameras in the top 20)

Interesting notables:

Sony A99 sitting at #65 (wow)
D800 sitting at #16
D600 at #23, #32

Canon:

5D Mark III - #8, #11
6D - #12 and #13

I guess people don't use DxOMark as a basis of purchase.

There's much more to it than cameras. Regardless, Nikon's recent financial results have been even more lackluster. And Sony's even more so, except the company sold a chemical division which padded the bottom line. Canon is doing fine in a challenging world economy.

Same story in B&H too.

Actually even better. 9 out of top 10 best sellers are from Canon.

Nope!  I never understood how people could put so much emphasis on one source.

This is very strange! I thought D800 was mopping up the 5D mIII.

Haha.

Its true that D800 outsold 5D3 in early days when there were all sorts confusion, disappointment and excitement about megapixel, price etc. Then fogs cleared. 5D3 became one of the most highly regarded DSLRs of all time. It always sold more than D800 in B&H and last several months in Amazon.

A couple times a year, I sign up for classes at the local university (UC San Diego) in their photography program offered through the extension.  The classes are inexpensive and fun and I always learn something. This time I enrolled in a strobe workshop. I figured I would be the only person in there with a 5DIII. Not so, as it turns out I am one of 4 who have one which is 4 out of about 15 people. The point is, people are buying these things despite the rather steep price.

I am the only one with a pair of 600EX’s and an ST3 though.

I was going to buy pocket wizards but I determined that I could sell my 580's and buy 600's for about the same total price.  The downside is that if I ever graduate to big-time strobes, the PW's could work for those as well but the PW's don't do ETTL (not the standard ones anyway).

I got my camera and my lenses to shoot photos with.  As long as my gear continues to work, I wouldn't really care if Canon went out of business.

Most times I come to DPR, I leave wondering how people can obsess over so many unimportant details.  And then every now and then I'll see a wonderful photo that I would never have thought to create, find a bit of inspiration, and realize why I put on my boots and wade through this place.

I suggest more going out and shooting, and less reading financial statements.  You'll feel better.
