P7700 minimum apertures in aperture priority mode
Jan 27, 2013

I am on the verge of buying a P7700 and have read many of these excellent threads, I have found the max apertures related to zoom setting but now want to know the minimums in aperture priority. f8/f11/f16/f32???

thanks

Smallest aperture at all zoom ranges is the same f8, just like all 1/1.7" sensor cameras.

Thanks both.

Walkaround I have only ever owned DLSR with Aps-C I was not aware that the min aperture was dependent on sensor area.

Bit of a bummer as I was hoping for f11 or even F16.

When comparing it to a DSLR, the aperture is not the same because of the crop factor. At f8 it would be equal to f36.8 in a full frame DSLR (see info below) - bper

"Equivalent aperture (in 135 film terms) is calculated by multiplying lens aperture with crop factor (a.k.a. focal length multiplier).

Nikon Coolpix P7700 equivalent aperture

f9.2 - f18.4" 35-mm equivalent aperture = (f2.0 - f4.0) × 4.6 =
Aperture = f2.0 - f4.0
Crop factor= 4.6

thanks.

however that is an equivalent you cannot dial it in for use with say manual ext flash or playing with DoF

Applying crop factor to the aperture, in this case 4.55, is not hypothetical - it is actual equivalence you can verify experimentally.

"Playing with depth of field" is not a strong suit of smaller sensor cameras. Max aperture f/2 on the P7700 is f/9 on a 135 format, for the same distance to subject and framing.

As a people photo that is reassuring, pic wise it looks like 5.6 not your calculated 9.

Thanks for the info.
