I MUST be doing something wrong

I get a D2x . . . no problems.

I get a D200 . . . no problems.

I get a D300 . . . no problems.

I get a D700 . . . no problems.

I get a D7000 . . . no problems.

I get a D600 . . . no problems.

Now, what am I doing right?????? I am not Pollyanna. I am terribly pragmatic - very picky. Just luck? Do I represent the majority? Or the lucky few? Or is this the pi$$ and moan forum? I REALLY don't think so!

The signal to noise ratio on the Internet is whacked and it's inevitable. Most people don't say much when a purchase works as they expect, so there's a distinct silent majority in contrast to the very vocal (who may have a legitimate reason) minority.

Well Steve... I'd say you've had a good run!

I went through the D100, D2X, D80, D200, D300, and D600. No problems for me, except I DID have a severe banding issue with the D200 so I returned it. And my D600 does get those lube spots, but I wet clean every now and then and I'm still a happy owner. So my luck's been pretty good too.

Maybe you have no problems because you use the equipment in conjunction with your photographic knowledge and experience therefore perceived problems that some others post persistently about are not equipment problems at all ! from Nikkormat days to the present the only camera that had to be returned for a repair was my D200 which had a user inflicted crack to the top LCD replaced, my fault, I paid up and did not go on a winge fest about design faults etc.

I agree 100%. A lot of people here on the fora seem to buy a camera to shoot test charts and look for dust.. :-).

In reality I think those with problems shout the loudest and those without problems enjoy their cameras

No problems here either. D70,200,300,800e or Nikon lenses for that matter. 18-70, 50 1.8D, 50 1.4D, 35-70D, 24-120 VR, 70-200 VR, 24-70, 28 1.8, 50 1.4, 85 1.4G.  I once had a sandisk CF card that truncated some images.

I am not trying to minimize those who have had or who are currently having QC issues.  Perhaps I need to be more critical or demanding of my equipment.  I don't know, but the complaints around here are deafening  and drown out what used to be an extremely illuminating place for instruction and enlightenment to the collective advancement of photographic knowledge.  Many of resources have long since discontinued their valued contributions.  Still, this is a gear forum and I enjoy the banter and the people that are still here and willing to impart their experiences. Hopefully all can get their gear in good working order without having to endure any further delay.

Same here

D70, D200, D300, D2x, D3, D800, 1V1, more than 15 Lenses - no problems

Once per year check and clean with cross calibration of the hole actual equipment at Nikon Duesseldorf. That takes 5 days incl. carriage.

I broke my D3 with 24-70. This was perfectly fixed within 5 days also.

Nothing wrong, I'm happy.

"The Value of user data"   http://www.bythom.com/

I think Thom Hogan is a reliable source and he is basically saying that the data point to a significant number of D800 bodies that have under-performing focusing response.

I've got a good 600 too, Steve, but I had 2-7000s (and I know yours was terrific) that were focusing dogs.

And it wasn't me, but I sure thought so for a good 2 months and it was a miserable experience

Moved on to a D700 and 30 seconds with that body lifted all the self doubt I had about my "skills".

But the D700 has had to go into the shop twice in 24 months. I have a 70-300 vr that has required three trips to Nikon to keep the VR working. I have a 35mm 1.8 DX with a broken focus motor, It just quit.

So I am a Nikon user, they are remarkable machines, but I don't wear rose colored glasses.  I think they have some real and tangible problems.

notice that steve skipped the D800, guess he did want the hassle of this one

funny how people will say that the ones with no problems are shooting and the ones that have problems are amplified on the net to make it sound worse than it is, funny how this isn't happening in the canon forum, what does THAT say about nikon products and canon shooters way outnumber nikon shooters happy or unhappy ones!

I had a problem...
In reply to Steve Bingham, 4 months ago

After five years my D2x had a major electronic failure. Cost $450 to fix.

D100, D700, and D800E all good.

In my experience, and I am making judgements carefully about this, QA and QC worsened quite a bit with recent releases and the support goes with it. Consider yourself quite lucky with d7000 and d600.

Do I represent the majority? Or the lucky few?

Hopefully! If not, Nikon won’t last long. In case of d600 you don’t, not at this point.

Or is this the pi$$ and moan forum? I REALLY don't think so!

Slightly sometimes things are tuned this way imo. It’s far more individual though, that is, you really think right. Most everyone wants to see his/her brand - camera - equipment - in a good light. And they often tend to try hard.

Or is this the pi$$ and moan forum?I REALLY don't think so!

These two sentences at the start and at the end, one in the title, the other with an exclamation mark don’t agree with each other. In other words, I’d carefully make my mind and then choose the title.

I am all for the simplicity but we get into complicated situations alongside immense scale of advantages of the Internet. We know advantages of about anything come always with some other drawbacks. Or, it can at least seem so. And wherever large numbers of people are involved the market square logic and buying eggs mentality won’t serve well any reasonable purpose here. For that we need to see a bit beyond that point. I'd even call it a basic rule.

D800 here. No problems. AF accuracy is great under the vast majority of conditions. It's not perfect every time if you really want to push it (like f1.4 under low light, moving subject), but NO camera is perfect every time with every single AF point. And with 36mp, we are noticing slight AF that you can barely see at 12mp with some sharpening. I guarantee that the d800 AF is better than d700, but we are all inspecting the files closer.
