Isn't it time we dump the monarchies? The British monarchy is the worst bunch of f-ups and louses around and yet they live in rich opulence and thumb their noses at their subjects and the world in general. Its like how stupid is the general public to allow these farces to continue?

I think you may have mist the fact about the millions of dollars they bring in from the American and overseas tourists, every time you are at the gates of Buc Palace that is all one hears. There seemed to be a pretty big crowed at the Queens diamond jubilee 2012. What would they have a republic something like the US, and what would all the commonwealth country's do ever year for there meetings.

They earn more for the government than their keep. They are independently wealthy and do not live on the government dole. As I see it, they are like animals in a zoo where people pay big money just to gawk at them.

This is the second thread you've started on the British Monarchy. What's your problem this time, too much to drink?
Why do you care Malibu, is it because you don't have one but allways wanted one?
Never mind you did have the Kennedy's for a while, oh until you shot them that is. LOL

In the crisis after the death of Princess Diana they were on the brink. But since, they have won enormously in popularity, mainly due to Queen Elizabeth.

The British Royal Family and all it's related trimmings earn the UK $billions in tourist dollars every single year.
It costs the UK tax-payer only $180 Million per annum to keep them. Seems like a pretty good investment to me.
Also, the Royals have a lot of ambassador style clout in the business world...and secure lots of trade & investment contracts from overseas firms for Britain....that just regular diplomats and biz contacts could not.
London is (by far) the worlds most visited city. Do you think this would be the case...IF England had no monarchy, no Buckingham Palace, no Tower of of London, no Windsor Castle, and all the rest of it?
Nah, I don't think so.
Plus, IF one gets rid of the Royals....what do you actually replace it with (as a tourism /business destination-vehicle)...and how much is that going to cost instead? To create the kind of destination-market pull that Britain has at the moment...via other means, may in the long run be extremely difficult to do....and a lot more costly.
There's nothing wrong with maintaining ones heritage and cultural traditions...IF the country and it's people actually benefit from it. Britain, without a Royal Family and everything that this entails would simply be like any other colonial outpost.
And that just wouldn't do....now would it ole chap
Pass the TEA would you.

"Dumping the British Monarchy" is not a decision an American will ever get to make. FWIW they bring in millions (if not billions) of pounds of tourism to our country every year, they make a valuable contribution to our history and heritage and the head of state is also part of our democratic process. Instead of arming every citizen we take the more civilised view that our head state can also be a "checkpoint" for key changes to law and governance, we find it's a lot safer that way for everyone.
The Royal Family bring in far more revenue to the country than they cost and they are also the envy of many countries who either have never had a monarchy (USA for instance) or who got rid of their own.
I challenge anyone to go and experience the "Trooping of the colour" or any other similar occasion involving the Royal Family and not be impressed.

Other have already commented on the cost/benefit analysis of having the Royals.
In addition, I would like to add that Prince Charles' farms produce wonderful organic food and delicacies, like buttermilk scones, honey, strawberry jam which is just out of this world, superb ham and other products.
His farming business makes a lot of money also, he even pays taxes, a damnable thing for a royal, isn't it ?
If you were to argue that today's royals are merely the descendants of the village bullies and local heroes of two thousand years ago who were "elected" to their job of king of something, I might agree with you.
PS
some people also write "skones" instead of "scones", I wonder about that.

Ubi's just jealous. The Queen has done an amazing job since the middle of the last century repaid many times for the amount brought in to the UK in tourism. Plus the fact she is an amazing non political ambassador that countries like the US would eat their hearts out for. She doesn't interfere in our politics but maintains a huge interest. Long may she reign, beats all other systems by a mile.

You may be as proud of your Monarchy generating revenues as you are proud of a casino, generating similar revenues.Nothing wrong with that.
But when I hear of people talking how privileged they were of the visit to the palace and seeing the old bag from 10 feet away , feeling as if they were before a deity, I cringe.
I have just finished Rod Stewart's biography, and even he felt humbled, star struck and shaky , performing before the Queen?
