Steve had a play with the X100S at CES and describes the autofocus speed as "blazing".

"....... and same layout of controls."
Uh no. I can think of at least two significant changes to the control layout.

I see AF button is now on the dial on the right, no longer at the annoying left column. Yayy!!

yes, one of the worst positions for it, at least if it was like on X-Pro1 on the bottom Now the problem has been solved and AF button is at more logical place.
I really would like to see what SH will say about AF in comparison with his beloved OMD

Considering the lengthy hatchet job he did on the original - mainly AF issues - only to recant when it proved an industry 'darling' amongst better, more renowned, reviewers - I'll pass on his opinions.
My (most recent) claim to fame is that the Huff banned me from his site when I suggested the X100 was far too complex a tool for his abilities ... and that it was he, not the camera, that failed to deliver the goods!

I concur - although the model at CES is pre-production, it's super fast on AF.
I went to try the OMD, Sony, Samsung, EOS M etc at the show, and the X100s smoked them all

I do remember that one I think the problem was that he fell in love with OMD, we both very well remember his 'crazy comparisons' where he used different settings on camera just to show how OMD is better than anything else.
I think he retracted quite a few remarks he's said after he handled fully updated X100, he still hates X-Pro1 though.

Steve Huff is the new Ken Rockwell !! Though I admit this may be 'old news' around here
'The latest' camera is always 'the only one I use' for him. X-Pro1 then ... Leica M now RX1. He's a site-hit 'whore' (pardon my French)
No doubt Steve and Ken will each proclaim 'the X100S is the only camera I use' long before official release to try to convince us they have an 'inside track' to the major manufacturers. Then they will continue to buy and review (or pretend to) everything else anyone else releases that proclaims to take photographs
Of course, being 'British', I'm far to polite to even consider the use of that foul term 'douchebag'

FWIW, he's owned the X100, X-Pro1 and now the X-E1, and from what I understand he ended up keeping the X-E1 and loves it. He returned the OMD, the X-Pro1 and X100. He's a guy who goes through cameras and is pretty picky in certain scenarios. I'm not about to throw his opinion out the window, but I think it's important to know a bit about his situation when reading his reviews.

Like others here have suggested, Huff is a camera whore and hit-site proprietor par-excellence ...
Pandering to differing audiences - merely to drive traffic - is the clue that you can't really trust a thing he says about cameras. Now 'lecturing' on cruise ships - god-knows where he finds a back-yard on an ocean liner in order to demonstrate his photo tips.
Sadly, he could be good if he applied himself ...

It's easy to forget, but Steve Huff's site is just a personal blog where he writes whatever he thinks about whatever cameras he gets his hands on. He's clearly truly into his photography, and like many gearheads he does a lot of getting excited about new cameras believing each to be 'the one'.
The difference between him and us in this forum is he's amassed a sizeable audience because people actually enjoy his perspectives. And that's not unwarranted: he's written a lot of interesting articles.
Don't get hung up on the fact he changes stances and seems a bit all over the place. He's not a professional writer, his blog isn't a professional publication. Just because he's popular doesn't mean he has to write any differently to how he wrote when his blog was a crappy fledgeling — I know I wouldn't.

I enjoy reading Steve's articles, inspiration articles and so on. I usually ignore 'crazy comparisons' and Leica diehards in the comments there are quite a few who would be able to beat crap out of you if you badmouth Leica.
He isn't like Ken, he actually does test gear and has the gear in his hands. Ken, though, hard to tell

I feel the opposite.
I think people like Steve Huff and Ken Rockwell are great resources for advice. In fact I wouldn't have known about the X100 if it wasn't for Ken Rockwell. Steve too, went through a journey with the X100 where he initially liked it, then returned it because it was too slow etc. and then bought the black edition with the new firmware and loved it. It was great to follow that and learn from.

Obviously not aware of the antagonism he used to create here on DPR many years ago ... with his wild swings from brand X to brand Y and his preposterous claims about this and that feature (under numerous pseudonyms). Most people were glad to see the back of him and are happy he now seems to restrict himself to his own site (unless he still prowls these fora under new identities).

I was going by this article.
I now see this is written by a guest author, hah. My bad.
Which I found to be a nice read. It's similar to how my life is with both cameras and other devices. Sure, sometimes I buy the newest thing, but I tend to send it back when the next thing comes until I find something I'm happy with.
Either way, I found his preview, and some of his articles to be good reads. I don't see why people take this stuff so seriously.
