Did Fuji just wallop X-E1 sales?

About to pull the trigger but the new cams seem so much more complete.
If I really needed one I would buy in any case but since it is discretionary I will wait for the X-E1s.
Kinda weird in my view.

You would have to be crazy to shell out for the old tech of the XE 1 now that fuji have released the X100s.

The XE-1 will get a FW update with goodies that it can have. along with the xpro 1

I can say in my own case that my consideration of the X-E1 took a dive based on this recent news. We clearly see where the Fuji mirrorless cameras are going and there are big upgrades coming in the newer models. In the case of the X-E1, I really want the almost released 14mm lens, but I dont want the X-E1 in its current form. Tough call. This is a well designed update by Fuji's marketing group to maximize re-purchases.

If you buy any tech nowadays you know it's going to be obsolete in 2 years (or less if you're an iPad 3 owner :-x)

Same as Nikon. Half way into the run on many of their cameras, they bring out an "S" version, incorporating technology of the past couple of years without having to bring out an all new camera. D300->D300s for example. Renews and stimulates sales of older models with minimal capital outlay, compared to a whole new model.
The X100 and X-E1 are very different cameras. Fixed lens tied to a specific sensor, can only use lens components, excellent fill-flash at full power up to 1/2000th for use in the harshest sunlight, totally self-contained, silent. My X100 is my pocket/pouch camera that is always with me. My X-Pro1 is my ultimate urban, walkin'-'round system camera. Different purposes, different cameras, both excellent at what they do best—compliments rather than rivals.

You miss the point. WIth the X100s, we now know what is next in store for the X-E1 and X-Pro 1. People who want better autofocus or better manual focus ability now know it is coming in the next version of the system cameras. Before one could hope, but not prove, that the next version might offer an improvement but now it's different. Fujifilm has shown what they can do and now buying the current X-E1 and X Pro 1 is a decidedly less attractive move unless they MUST have the camera now.

But some of the improvements to the X100s depend on having an improved sensor and processor. The X-E1 and X-Pro1 definitely won't get Digital Split Screen or phase detect autofocus, and they might not even get focus peaking if this depends on the new "twice as fast" processor. We'll see this week what they do get, if anything.
Even so, I'm really liking my X-E1 and have been needing a better camera for a long time, so I'm not going to be too pouty over this. Most likely when the X-E1s or X-E2 comes out, I'll sell mine for a loss and get the new one.

2 years is fine. X-E1 sales only got off the ground in early December in most places. That's a month ago. Their X-E1 sensors are already a generation behind.

About the only things in the specs of the X100s that should deter X-E1 buyers is the improvements to manual focus performance through PDAF on sensor. Nothing about any previous APS-C PDAF on sensor camera (EOS-M, NEX-5R, NEX-6) suggests an actual/material improvement in AF speed.
If you were planning to buy the X-E1 yesterday and shoot in AF, nothing has changed since yesterday, except that its possible you would be buying a camera with better high ISO performance than the X100S...

There are still people that want and or need the flexibility of an interchangeable lens camera. So for those people, they have the XP1 and XE1. A new camera with newer tech shouldn't take precedence over a photographers needs.

I'm in the same boat; brought the XE-1 about 3 weeks ago and just saw this news about the X100S. But, to me at least; this release is not geared toward the XE-1, X-Pro owners because it is still a fixed lens camera. It's for the X100 owners who need to upgrade after two years. When I was shopping for my next camera, the fix lens was not on my radar because I wasn't looking for a fix lens camera; I wanted an interchangeable camera and the XE-1 filled the bill.
However; if the X100S looks good as it does, I might pick it up to compliment XE-1 instead of buying just the 23mm lens.

I will confess to owning an X100 that I'm thinking of replacing with a X100S. My only issues with the X100 largely revolve around the sensor. None of that really impacts on the X-pro1 I also own. What it really does is say to me that the X100 is now obsolete - that doesn't mean its a bad camera, rather than there is another camera that is better.

You're right on the money!
The X100 / X100s isn't intended to compete with the XP1 or XE1. The X100 is for many, a small fixed lens camera that supplements their interchangeable lens camera. For some, the X100 / X100s might be the only camera they need if they're primarily a 35mm shooter.
The X100 series is in a different camera market than the XP1 or XE1.

Just an aside - I went to your website and had a look around. Fantastic stuff. YOU sir are a real photographer. Not that you have to impress the likes of me of course, but you are way up the scale from most in these parts I'd say.

For example, look at the Ipad mini; everyone knows the next version will have an improved retina screen yet, it selling like hot cakes. Another example is, most likely we'll get a cheaper FF mirrorless interchangeable soon maybe less than a year; yet people still buy the current models instead of waiting for it. I guess what I'm saying is; there's always something better around the corner especially in consumer electronics.

I agree with you, but this case is slightly different. The X-E1 just hit the market last month. It's sensor is already the last generation. 1 month. That's crazy. This is an extreme example of products being outclassed very quickly.
Imagine this new X100s being a generation old with the release of an X Trans III sensor in March. Then you might understand how some feel.

But precisely what does this new sensor do that isn't the equivalent of go faster stripes on a car? To me this is a real challenge to x100 owners, but there is no reason for x-e1 owners to be worried at all

I agree the announcement is a little too close to the XE-1; it would have been better say in March; availability in April. Then we would have had a 6 month honeymoon with the XE1 and only 6 months to wait for the XE2. I still think they are just different enough to compete with different consumers; one is fixed and the other is interchangeable.

Think about it this way. How long as the x100 been out? It's due for an update. The x100 and XE1 are different cameras on different development paths. I don't see the issue.
