Panasonic G5, Where's the full review?
|
The G5 Preview was published in July. Here we are 5+ months since and no Full Review. The camera was available in August when I got mine. To me it was a major upgrade to the G3 covering all the things I didn't like about that camera (too small, no automatic shift between LCD and EVF, general "fiddle-liness") in fact I go to it more often than the supposedly higher level GH2.
So what's the problem? Did it do so well in testing that it defied belief so it had to be re-tested? Or the reverse, so badly that it needed retesting and on and on.
I have to wonder if DPReview's focus has shifted too much away from it's original mission, camera testing and reviews. The seemingly over-emphasis on needless changes to format could be getting in the way.
Inquiring minds want to know.

And I wonder why people have lost their ability to count. The problem is that digital ILC (interchangeable lens cameras) were released at a rate of about 8 per year in 2003 and about 35 per year in 2012. A similar increase could be observed for non-ILCs (which I did not count).
DPreview has not reviewed less cameras per year, it is reviewing more cameras every year but probably not quite keeping up with the increase in new releases.

Yes I do agree, where is the the review on the G5. In my opinion it is a a very well balanced camera in all aspects. I am in the process of purchasing a second body to my 12-35 and 35-100 lenses. I just want to know what dPreview think of the two bodies compared. Hope the full review will come soon!!!

There are a large number of reviews-a-lacking, and not just by DPR but other review sites as well, imho. Why?

I think the only way now to make the reviews faster is to have more good staff to make them.
But don't know if it is easy to find good review makers to hire. Guess is not easy.

Allan:
PLEASE share your impressions of those two lenses! I have the 14-140 and am considering switching. For example, is the 35-100 reasonably sharp at the long end? My 14-140 drops off more than I would like.

I agree totally. The G5 is the best camera from Panasonic that I have ever used. Should be a gold award for sure if reviewed...Sometimes I think dpreview thinks it's ok to skip a generation when it seems that a camera is similar to the previous (like the G3). However, it's not always that simple. The G5 actually improves on the G3 in many ways, especially JPEG image quality. I owned the G3 and the G5 JPEG quality is noticeably better.

More camera reviews less "other" stuff

I would also like to see the G5 complete review. Personally, I think dpreview has broadened their topic base too much and lost a lot of the core that many of us come here for: camera reviews. All the other gear & articles could perhaps be segmented to a separate staff group?

Here's a couple of preview/reviews. I saw a more complete one someplace before I bought mine but can't seem to locate it now.

Why do you want to see a G5 review if you already own it. Surely the one we want to see is the G7. I would rather DPR were looking to the future rather than the past

Kind of hard to review a camera like the G7 that has not been announced...

As a mater of fact , what about the G4? Was it so terrible or is it a question of marketing superstition?

The story is the word for "4" in Mandarin is pronounced the same as "nearly dead" so no G4 (or floor 4 in many hotels, like no 13th floor or row 13 on plane).

No but it will be coming and now is the time DPR could be putting the review in their forward planning scheule so that they don't end up with more threads like trhis one.

That's interesting. My Panasonic TZ-4 sold very poorly but it's near-twin the TZ-5 travelcam did extremely well. This might explain it.

It is a silly thing.
Nikon and Canon seem to not be afraid of that. One example is the Nikon D4, the best pro Nikon.

It's 'fewer' cameras actually, so you shouldn't really be talking about people 'losing the ability to count' when you have either lost, or never had a basic understanding of grammar.

. . . The X-E1 and NEX6 are more interesting to more photographers than the G5.

There's a hand-full of Panasonic G5 reviews out there on lesser-known camera review sites. But I do agree, it seems DPR would have completed one by now. DPR just hired Jeff Keller, a well- respected camera reviewer, this will help. For a bunch of G5 reviews, see links at:

Show me the numbers. DPreview staff have been repeatedly been on the record saying that they have increased the number of reviews per year more or less steadily for several years. If you want to contradict them, you have to provide the proof.
