Tastes of Bali with the G5
|
With the G5 I finally felt the confidence in m43 to leave my Canon FF DSLR kit at home on an international trip. The improved ergonomics and DR gains over my earlier G3 are subtle, but make all the difference. I really felt I missed little in terms of IQ and gained much in terms of portability and convenience.
I mainly used the 14-45 (occasionally with screw in B+W grad filter), the 7-14 (for which I've have a simple lee filter attachment made from a peanut paste jar lid) and the new 60mm Oly Macro - an excellent lense for non-macro work as well.
Here's a selection - C&C always welcome.

That first one is just strikingly beautiful.
The green ones (3,4,5,8) seem a bit overprocessed/oversharpened. I'd back down a little bit on the shadow lightening and quite a bit on the sharpening...it's a bit distracting from the beauty of the place.
Great spot for photos, that is for sure. I wish I was there right now instead of in 20 degree F temp and a foot of new snow on the ground.....

The first one is nothing short of breathtaking, one of the best pic I've seen on here. The rest aren't bad either.
I'm interested on how you find the DR of the G5 compared to the G3, it's not much on paper but in real life? Were there shots you couldn't of taken with the G3 due to worse DR or does the G5 just make things easier?

wonderful series - thanks for sharing. I just began my G5 adventures recently and am delighted to see some pictures posted here, rather than only gear discussions comparing this to that - your pictures are worth a thousand words!! How realistic are the colors in your images compared to your memories of the scenes?

thanks jalywol. i'm a bit like a little like a kid with a new toy since I got CS6 which seems to allow (with the G5 at least) pushing the shadows more than I have in the past and so perhaps in my enthusiasm overdoing it a bit here. The sharpening I confess I continue to struggle with for images I upload to Dpreview - previously I've been a bit dissappointed with images in my gallery not appearing as sharp as they do on my home machine... these I sharpened a second time after resizing downward for the gallery, but looks like I have yet to get the balance right.

thanks Picman. The G5 has improved DR, but it's maybe only half a stop better. It's not going to make the difference between getting a shot and not, it's just that plus a host of other little refinements (ergonomic mainly) that together make me much happier with it than with the G3.

thanks Dontfret. To my memory the colours are pretty close, but I'm not sure I've captured the full glory of balinese colour - the emerald greens are particularly vivid. I have been pretty impressed with the "as shot" AWB result from the G5... rarely did I feel any of the other presets provided a truer rendition.

All I can say is that the b&w is a waste. Gorgeous stuff, Robo...

…except for the b&w and I would have to say the monkey is a bit cliched.
I'm with Vittorio -- that first shot in particular is a ripper.
Did you shoot JPEG? Are you happy with the JPEG colors?
Now tell me, can you use flash with the electronic shutter? The answers to my question about this seem to be theoretical rather than practical.
Cheers, geoff

Very nice work!:-)
I'm curious about how you made the filter attach the 7-14 as I would like this as well. Do you care to share some pics of your solution?

thanks for the kind comments all.
Henry - the flash doesn't work with electronic shutter. i tried but it wont fire. these were all produced from RAW fies but i'm pretty happy with the jpeg colour...less green tinge than some earlier panys.
christian,my solution for the 7-14 filter mount in the thread below.

the first one is definitely gorgeous, the others are also very nice. I'd love to see the b&w in color because Bali to me means color (got married there in 2004 and will hopefully celebrate the 10th anniversary in a small resort between Singaraja and Tulamben). Regarding the greens, your images look a lot like mine color-wise. The greens on Bali are somehow unreal and looking at the pics later on you start to ask yourself if you made a mistake in PP.

Very well done! I can totally relate to the colors being from another tropical place - Kerala.
Thanks for posting.
