Reading about the NEX cameras here has made me regret my purchase.....
|
I bought an NEX-6 with the kit lens along with the SEL55-210 ($199, long story). I replaced a Nikon D40. After reading of all the issues and shortcomings here with regard to the NEX-6, I'm not feeling too good about dropping $1000 on a mediocre camera.
Maybe I should have just sucked it up and updated to a newer DSLR and a separate pocket digital for keeping in my pocket.
i either need to start enjoying my camera or stop reading........

Can you list some of the issues and shortcomings? This might help others who want to change from DSLR to NEX.

My rule is to stop reading after buying and don't pick it back up until I get to grips with the cam, never been motivated by reading reviews after buying something (before buying I focus perhaps too much on the positive, afterwards mainly the neg's stand out... even when they are completely irrelevant to my type of shooting)

Please elaborate. Apart from missing microphone input and touch screen, I can't think of many...

Is this post meant to be ironic? If so you need to be careful as such things don't translate well on the internet, particularly when there is a large community reading who do not have English as a native language
The NEX 6 is not a mediocre camera: it is an excellent rangefinder-style camera which is perfect for travel and street type photography. The only direct alternatives to the NEX 6 are more expensive options from Fuji or Leica, the Micro four thirds format that suffers from a smaller sensor and which can never support full-frame, or the Samsung NX format which has a nicer lens system than Sony but (currently) inferior bodies. Neither Canon or Nikon mirrorless systems offer any real competition to NEX for different reasons
A DSLR is an entirely different proposition and can't really be compared to a mirrorless camera any more than a 35mm rangefinder system can be compared to a 35mm SLR system

Keep in mind that this is a totally open forum. Anyone can make an account, log in here and say almost anything they want. There's no requirement that "you must understand what you're talking about to post". This is fine, as it allows folks to learn. However, at least some complaints must be taken with a grain of salt (probably many).
Also keep in mind that people with an actual problem (and/or "regular complainers") will post things, while many more people are just happy shooting, without talking about problems/complaining. So, the appearance of the happy-owners-to-unhappy-owners ratio may appear skewed.
I, for one, have been shooting on DSLRs for 9 years, and I couldn't be more thrilled with owning the NEX-6.

My first reaction: if this is a joke, it's not funny. Sounds like maybe you got a deal!
Maybe I should have just sucked it up and updated to a newer DSLR and a separate pocket digital for keeping in my pocket.
Except you stopped using your DSLR for a reason (too bulky, in my case), and the low quality of a P&S would've bugged you.

Use it already! The proof is in the pudding, as the saying goes.

You can compare, just realize that there are valid reasons for one or the other.

That's my point I guess. I and my photographer daughter love the camera. I'll stop reading unless I can't figure something out or need to search for specific information.
BTW, it's not really different than other forums. Im a triathlete also and you'd be surprised at how pick we can get about the drag of aero wheels or bike frames

I for one never looked back after years of using Canon DSLR's with HUGE L-Glass... I have the NEX-7 and all I heard in the beginning from quite a few people is how noisy the sensor is compared to the 5N... Issues with the video button... So on and so on...
Well let me state for the record that the NEX-7 has been one of the best detachable lens cameras I have ever owned and that includes the DSLR's I used. The resolving power has been perfect for my photography. You hear about the kit lens not being any good. What ever!! I have taken some amazing photos at f/8 using that kit lens and you should be able to do the same.. Itrs a great walk around lens for what it is. That being said I have a Sigma 19mm and a Sony 50mm OSS which I highly recommend.. My next purchase with be the Sony 35mm OSS..
Sony is getting there with their lenses and so the argument that SONY has no good lenses is almost moot. I look forward to the next SONY CAMERA that will accompany my NEX-7... But for now BE HAPPY and learn the system you have as there is a learning curve to getting the most out of your camera.... Regards.

Stop reading the forums and go out with your Nex and take some pictures...it is a beautiful day in NJ! If you are still inclined to replace a similar camera like your D40 buy a D5100.

Now John, as I triathlete maybe I can see needing an aero wheel.... But for me as an avid Cannondale road cyclist, I have never been able to pull the trigger on such expensive wheels. LOL... I do enjoy riding long distance rides and am even trying to add photography with that by adding GoPro Video cams to the bike for video and stills using the Wi-Fi remote attached to my wrist to control it. My two favorite things to do. Photography and cycling..

But the kit lens doesn't suck. Not being as good as primes or high end zooms doesn't mean it sucks. If you want to see zooms that suck, try a Quantaray 70-210 on A-mount. Or, my a-mount 18-70 is worse than the Nex kits. At least try it where it's good and at f8 ...
But I agree with what you're getting at - if you're worried about getting the best out of the camera, put a great lens on it.
But I don't think we know what the OP is worried about.
so OP should get some decent ones like Sigma primes and Sony primes
