Problem - YN622c with 2nd shooter
Dec 22, 2012

Hello.
I just purchased four units of the YN622c for wedding photography and I found that I have a little problem I cant seem to find a way to solve.
I was shooting with a second photographer who also used a YN622 tranciever.
the problem was that on every shot we made, we each triggered the "on camera" flash of the other (the flash that was sittng on the camera hot shoe).
is there a way to make a unit work as transmitter only?
Will really appreciate your input...
Orr.

That is how the YN-622s work, unfortunately. You can read more about this in "The Other YN-622C User Guide", especially P.9.

The only solution AFAIK is to work the channels, and communicate with each other so only one uses the ambient-augmenting lights at one time. While one shooter is using the room lights, the other can still user his on-top flash - it is not channel-sensitive.

Thank you for your reply.
that is really disappointing to find that I've spent good money for something that is not right for my way of work.

I can think of two options now.

1. maybe I could find a way to use them as receivers only while triggering them with another YN (same channel) product... is something like that exist?!?

2. opening the unit and make a modification to cancel the reciever ability...

will be happy for any info.....

thanx.

It's not open to modifications like that. There is a huge 2-way data flow between the 622s. (And the camera, and each flash.)

Did you read P.9 and the suggestions from wedding photographers?

You have not said what you are doing with the 3rd and 4th 622s; I made an assumption.

Suggestion:
#1 - on Lead shooter's camera with flash on-top. Channel 2.
#2 - on 2nd shooter;s camera with flash on-top, channel 3.
#3, #4 - on stand in reception hall, bouncing off ceiling, or providing rim light. Both on channel 1.
Shooters move freely, using on-camera flash.
One shooter switches to channel 1 on the on-camera 622 to use reception flashes, and back to channel 2 or 3 when finished.

Hi again.

Thank you very much for willing to help and for your suggestions.
Unfortunately, this work method is not possible with our way of work... we both shoot rapidly, at the same time and we both need the flashes to be available for us constantly (yes, we use 2-3 flashes on the dance floor).

Unless I find a unit that could work as transmitter only, I understand these are simply not the right choice for my line of work.

such a pity, I was certain I finally found a decent piece of radio....

Hi, Orr Zahavi. You did find some good radio gear, but there doesn't seem to be an answer to your particular problem.

I would be worried about flashes overheating, anyway.

LOL Thanks again for your concern

I understand it may sound like we are abusing the flashes, but in fact we hardly ever reach ΒΌ power...

I've been shooting about 50 weddings like that in the past year and the small speedlights are feeling well

Do you know maybe if the YN-602 is compatible with some of the YN-622 channels?

Thanks again.

I was thinking about that. The 602 or 603 triggers do not respond to the 622 communications, regardless of channel. But they can be piggybacked.

#1 - 622 on CH 1 and on-top flashflash.
#2 - ditto, CH 2.
That stops one firing the other.

#3 - 622 on CH 1, with 602TX mounted. Two 602RX on room lights.
#4 - 622 on CH 2, with 602TX mounted. 602TX on same channel as #3.

Problem - there is a significant propagation delay introduced by the 602s.

602s are slow; 622s are fast in comms and in processing speed. I haven't yet tested but a high speed may be restored by piggybacking 4 more 622s on CH 3! You would have a good supply of backups.
