Anyone notice the DPR poll for camera of the year?
http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/12/19/best-camera-2012-poll
The E-M5 is tied w the D800 for top spot
Still a week to go tho.
I know this was mentioned on the Olympus DSLR forum, but don't recall seeing it here.

Yes, it's very slighly ahead right now (one pro mille). When I voted, it was about 22 percent for the D800 versus about 15 for the E-M5 so the Oly has caught up nicely.

And the lead is growing. No less than two pro mille now.

Within their segments. And both have relatively few unhappy users.

I own both. I voted for the D800. in terms of m43, the E-M5 is easily the camera of the year. but I think the D800 is better as a camera in most situations I encounter. it's all just a popularity contest anyways.

I think those last two cameras really haven't been out long enough to gather any sort of a following.
I'm surprised the RX100 isn't doing better considering how much people rave about it in the compact sector.
With regards to the D800 vs the OMD I sorta fail to see the argument. Unless you prefer en EVF is the OMD better in any way except for size? They are not competing products in the slightest so it seems like a sorta foolish comparison but meh.

I am even more surprised that 55% of votes (when writing this) are given to FF cameras, considering according to this forum FF cameras are seeming so large that they are completely unusable and always at home. Also 55% is quite good seeing that according to this forum they are of format that is dying off.
so here lies the answer to your question. Having a more compact is not considered to be better. Rx100 is more compact than m43 and in polls doing worse. FF are no compacts compared to smaller sensor cameras and doing the best over all. Contrary to what this forum dwellers staunchly believe.

I posted directly on the poll however IMO, the OM-D is more ground breaking in the fact that it got a lot of DSLR users to either leave their big kits at home or sell them off. I think a lot of folks realized that you can get amazing results with less than half the weight/size of a traditional DSLR... I'm one of those folks

Yeah, I always get a laugh when I read digs like "boat anchor", and "too heavy", etc. The whole idea of an SLR when it was released years ago was small size vs other camera systems of the day (Speed Graphic, LF and MF), and fast performance. Now in the age of seemingly endless miniaturization, we are expected to believe that DSLRs are actually not small, portable cameras, but "heavy boat anchors". When I'm out in the field, 80% of the time, my tripod is holding my gear, so there is little reason for me to carry a Pentax Q.
Also 55% is quite good seeing that according to this forum they are of format that is dying off.
Well 55% is not surprising for those cameras, I mean, the 5D3, D800/E, D600, 6D and A99 is one heck of a great lineup.
But no, FF is obviously not dying off if you judge by the auctions on Ebay, where almost ever bit of FF gear has dozens upon dozens of bids. It's the same for APS-C where every bit of quality gear generates tons of interest.

You can get amazing results with an X100, NEX-7, RX100 or XZ-2. The OM-D is not the first small camera with good IQ.
I think most people will vote for what they own. But as ayt wrote above, it's likely that someone who has used both the D800 and OM-D would have a hard time voting for anything but the D800. A camera that AFs quickly and accurately in the near darkness (share D4 AF module), increased resolution to the highest ever for a DSLR with class leading DR and high ISO performance and has made Nikon a player in the HDSLR video world is the definition of ground breaking.

as I said, there really are no defining terms to this poll. it is simply "Best of 2012." best of what exactly?
the OM-D (with m43 lens collection) is the camera that made many people rethink their larger bodies and switch over to something smaller that can keep up with the big boys in any situation. it has numerous features that make photography fun and effortless.
the D800 comes with a sensor 50% larger than the next DSLR competitor. it encroaches on medium format territory. as with the E-M5, there are former medium format users that switched over to the smaller D800.
anyways, all in good fun and it's amazing we have so many great choices to choose from this year. really was a great year for cameras. I haven't bought a new body since the GH1. this year, I got the both the E-M5 and the D800. there are many that are deserving of "best of" but to me, the D800 came out on top this year.

I keep looking at the independent film sites and Nikon is still pretty non-existant. Canon rules, and there is a lot more interest in the GH3. Having to down-size from 36 to 2 MP is a disadvantage. FF is great in low-light (which any film-maker tries to avoid), but bad of aliasing and moire.

Can we get more subjective than this comparison? But it is fun anyway and for the mFT format quite good OMD is having a slight lead. That would be totally impossible for anything the 4/3 format has ever delivered I think.
Personally I think the RX1 and RX100 are more groundbreaking in being a first FF like that and a first P&S with such an excellent IQ. From what I am getting from the GH3 it may be a better allround cam than the OMD. Oh....my subjectivity is getting the best of me so I'll stop here.

Well if you look at today's higher end DSLR market; D4, D800, 1Dx, etc as compared to the "original" SLR's; FM, OM1, AE1, etc they are huge! Hardly boat anchors but certainly not what I want to be walking around on vacation with or hiking miles into the woods with.
And, no they are not going away anytime soon however at some point in the future, they will either get smaller and lighter or be relegated to a very small market segment.

The OM-D e-m5 is not the best camera in the World but it is probably the most innovative camera of 2012, mainly because of its image-stabilisation (the best on the market). That means the freedom to take clear shots in almost any conditions.
That's might explain why it's among the favorite this year.
