T4i
Dec 20, 2012

Alright, I bought the T4i with the conon 70-300 usm, and the 40mm stm.  What I am finding is that I have a hard time taking group photos at close range.  What lens would work best for this?  Thanks TJ

It depends on your budget.  The cheapest would be the 18-55 IS kit lens.  There are other options, more expensive.  Canon 15-85 IS, Canon 17-55 IS f/2.8, 24-105L IS, 24-70L IS f/2.8,  etc.

There are also non-Canon options with which I am not familiar but someone else could give you info on those.

As said, the cheap option in the Canon 18-55 IS, which is a very nice lens that does not cost much at all really.

Midrange you can get a Tamron 17-50 2.8 non-VC. Faster, nice IQ.

From there you have more expensive option like a Sigma 17-50 2.8 or the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS.

Or the Canon 15-85 if you want to get a lot of zoom range in a very nice little lens. Not as fast, but great all round lens that will likely go wide as you will ever need. Costs a little more than the kit lens tho, of course

How about the Canon 10-22? Also do you really need video? This might sound kind of extreme but I'd actually sell the T4i and pick up a 5DClassic and get a 28mm 1.8 for it and you should be set.

the 10-22 is a crop lens for scapes.  It doesn't work on FF

the 5dc + 28 f1.8 is a bad idea and very limiting

I was talking about using the 10-22 on the T4i if he's sticking with that body. The 28mm is only as limiting as the 17-55 lens is on crop as 17 X 1.8 = 27mm. 1mm difference so pretty much no difference yet you gain a stop and 1/3rd of speed and can get excellent group shots and build up a nice set or primes.

I would not suggest any of the 17 zooms to the OP. I have used them and they all perform less than even the 50 1.8 II regarding image quality and speed.

The 10-20 is a nice lens, but a bit limited in range as a 'main lens'.It depends on what the OP is looking for tho.

That hasn't been my experience with the Tamron 17-50. It's by far more reliable than the 50mm 1.8 and the 50 needs to be stopped down to 2.8 to be sharp anyway.

While I like the 50mm, it can be difficult to get a good photo with. They are very nice when you get them, but keeper rate can be down a bit

Of course prime people like primes and zoom people like zooms, so there is always a bit of bias there. I use a bit of both and haven't picked a side yet

absolutely yes!

$649 - B&H - lowest I've ever seen it -- I paid $660 for mine a year ago as a part of a combo deal...

if you can swing it, get it.  your two lenses will have incredible range and quality.  15 -300

get also the $99 50 f1.8 II for low light without flash

Yea, well my Tamron lacked image quality, contrast, saturation, and had a cool color cast compared to my 50 1.8 and my 50 1.8 was sharp from 2.0 up. The Tamron had just as bad bokeh too :/.

Well, I quite like mine

Then the Sigma and Canon versions are completely different beasts again...

I like the 50mm too, but it's a glitchy little beast.

Do you shoot primarily portraiture?

No, which probably has a lot to do with it. I'm mostly a macro guy, but I have the 17-50 for a general purpose lens.
