Good software to find duplicate/matching images: Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder
4

I often need to determine if a given image is one of mine. This can be a very time-consuming task if the image has been stripped of its original file name and embedded metadata, as is often the case for images posted on blogs and social media sites.

I found a good solution in Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder:
http://www.mindgems.com/products/VS-Duplicate-Image-Finder/VSDIF-About.htm

As the name implies, this application searches for duplicate or similar images not by file name or metadata, but by visual similarity. It's like Google Image Search, but running on your own desktop, searching your own files.

I've been quite pleased by its performance, and it's very inexpensive.

The best ever software I have used for managing my photos is duplicate photo cleaner www.duplicatephotocleaner.com It pulls up all the photos in my folders that are similar not just the exact duplicates. I can view them side by side and decide which (if not both) to keep. Don't take my word for it, give it a try yourself, they have a free trial. This software has saved me over 4 gigs of space and counting.

I can suggest Image Comparer for finding and removing the duplicates. The benefits are:

- it can detect flipped or rotated duplicates

- supports RAW formats (great when you store your photos in both RAW and JPEG formats and finally decided to stay with only one of them)

- it detects resized duplicates with very high precision

This one works for me; and it's free. As well as matching duplicates, it also gives a percentage rating for shots that are extremely similar.

Indeed VSDIF is the best tool that I managed to find too. It provides the best results and can handle large libraries - 100 000+ files.

Latest cache system is incredibly fast.

An alternative tool that I've been using is "DuplicateFilesDeleter" Its best in finding and deleting duplicate photos, music and files.

Thank you so much! You made my day! The web is so spammed with crappy tools that it is hard to find such "gems" indeed. I see the idiots have spammed your thread with their crap too.

This tool is amazing indeed and besides the RAW support it supports Photoshop PSD files too and xmp sidecar files.

Great recommendation indeed.

I have tried each and every one of the software listed in the replies and the one you suggested is the only one that really does the better job in finding duplicates. Thanks so much for your post as it helped a lot to find a software that works very well. After reading your post, I spent a lot of time checking out the other software recommended with little success compared to this one. The others did a good job in their searches but were not able to find extensive similarities for a photo to the extend this one did. I am not sure of the support this company give but will see as I sent them a message asking a few questions. Their website is informative and helpful.

My collection was too large to handle for Image Comparer. Perhaps not enough memory on my system? I am running on 32 bits. Analyzing smaller sets was very good though.

Re: Good software to find duplicate/matching images: Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder

I totally agree that this software is the best I have used as well. However the customer service is 100% the worst I have ever encountered. Shortly before I rebuilt my PC with Windows 10 I verified the download link to the software I purchased from them worked. After rebuilding my PC from scratch (about 1 week after checking link to download software) I attempted to download the latest version of VSDIF 5.6.0.1 and I got the following message:

As you already know the free updates are per major release. E.g if you have purchased version 3.0.0.1 you get all the 3.x.x.x updates for free.

This is an old version that is no longer supported and no longer available for download.
If you have not unsubscribed from our mailing list then you have already been notified that this download will be discontinued and an upgrade discount for existing users was provided.
Please do not email the support with download requests as this file is removed from the system and the support team can no longer provide it.

You can order the latest version as it provides better results and more features.
Go to http://www.mindgems.com

I was positive that this was a mistake so I emailed support with confirmation of my purchase expecting then to send me a working link so I could re-download the software that I had purchased instead I got this response:

Hello

The link text is not clear enough (fixed in latest emails already) - it points to the latest version that you can download for free, but that can not be hosted forever.

I guess you have unsubscribed from our mailing list as we notified all our users that this download will be discontinued.

I would be glad to help, but as noted on the download page we no longer have access to your download file - it is your responsibility to backup files.

I recommend you to take advantage of the discounted link as I will not be able to provide one for version 7 or 8.

I am sorry for the inconvenience.

Somehow within 1 week they upgraded to a new major version and completely deleted all traces of version 5 software from their servers. I sent a few mails back and forth asking politely for them to provide me with a copy of the software I purchased from them with absolutely no luck at all. So as it stands now I am out of pocket $47.64 CAD and I am unable to find an archived copy of VSDIF 5.6.0.1 anywhere.

So word of warning make sure you keep a download of each release of the software!

If anyone has an archive of VSDIF 5.6.0.1 and would share it with me I have the registration info already.

Thanks and good luck.
