Does anyone else wish a D1-D4 forum could be broken out?

I think a more "professional" and "serious user" forum might result. Its getting harder to filter the noise. Couldn't it be that many beginning DSLR users might be better served in an "intermediate" forum?

Yes they could call it 'big showy low res camera forum'

I agree, I think the D1 - D4 should have its own forum,

I sort have been thinking the same thing, the downside might be that there would be very little traffic on the D1-4 pages. Not sure I'd agree with actually naming forums "beginning/intermediate", I'd rather follow the model of gear vs. the level of experience.

i say it ought to be segregated on the basis of how much money you've spent on your gear. that way, those who have the $6,000 pro bodies and $10,000 super-exotic teles can kick back without having to encounter the rabble.

who said money can't buy happiness?

Subdividing on the basis of the model isn't the smartest way to go, though. Sounds like what you want is more like "FX beginner" and "FX pro" - no reason a beginner couldn't buy a D4, after all.

Perhaps you'd be happier if there were an invitation-only forum, with admission limited to people who must prove themselves worthy

Yes, I would welcome a seperate D1-D4, or "pro class" forum. Seems everything here is rubbished up with oil spots on D600 and left focus errors of D800. Threads about the big machines go under in these floods, also think some real pro members left because of that.

At least put the D600 back in a semi-pro forum, maybe you could leave the D700 and D800 in. Same should be done on the Canon side.

On the german Nikon site the models are seperated in professional and consumer class:

D3*, D4, D800, D700 and even D300 (D1*, D2*, D200 were before) are in the pro class, D600 and the rest is in the consumer class. That also could work. I see to many D600 here and with that to many beginners with &%&% posts.

Just my opinion,
Roland.

I agree that the forum has been almost taken over by dust on my sensor and the left af bracket thing.  I see very little discussion in relationship to the pro gripped fx cameras.  I think that breaking the pro gripped fx cameras may not get much traffic.  Maybe breaking out the beginners and advanced users some way may be good?  This may not work because some beginners or people who are inexperienced but think they know it all may enter into the advanced users forum.

I am concerned on how it is set up now because yes we have lost some excellant photographers due to the nature of the forum that has come about with lots of new people who want conflicts more than technical talk.

I'm a serious user and I "only" own a D800E, D800 and D700, plus I also "only" own 14-24 f2.8, 16-35 f4, 24-70 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8, 35 f1.4G. 85 f1.4G, 105 f2.8 Micro, 300 f2.8 VRII, 500 f4, 1.4x TCII, 1.7x TCII and 2x TCIII, SB600, SB700 and SB800. Why should a "serious user" forum only be the realm of a D1-D4 user?

Its getting harder to filter the noise. Couldn't it be that many beginning DSLR users might be better served in an "intermediate" forum?

The best part is....

Some of the highest posters in this forum don't even own FF cameras.  Figure that one out haha.

I feel bad for anyone trying to have an intelligent conversation around here among all the tin foil hats and people shooting white walls at F22 instead of real subjects.

Lance,

Did you just get the d800E?  What kind of a strap do you use with your three cameras ha ha!!!!!

I'm like you, think the forum may be best broken out by experience using a FF dslr and not necessarily by model.

Consistent with 2 DX forums
In reply to Bill Fagan, 5 months ago

I guess in the past 2 FX forums weren't necessary because everyone here was serious and experienced. Or at least the non-serious and non-experienced folks seemed to have been keeping quiet. The D800 first and now the D600 seem to have changed the game in a way the D700 seldom did? Perhaps. I have a feeling the D1-D4 only forum will be more than less noisy -- it will be quiet like a library because the population of D1-D4 owners isn't all that great.

I think a separate forum is a good idea.

good luck keeping new D1-D4 buyers out
In reply to Bill Fagan, 5 months ago

while I agree that the various deals on the D600 may be leading to first-time DSLR owners or other less experienced users to buy into Nikon FX, I think your reasoning is flawed.

owning a D1-D4 does not automatically make the shooter a "professional" or a "serious user."  this simply means they had the means to purchase such a system.  might even be their first camera ever.

now, I doubt anyone buys a D1-D4 without a serious interest in high end photography, but not all D1-D4 owners are as experienced as what you would expect us to believe.

also, owning a D600 does not automatically mean you are not a "professional" or a "serious user."  someone could have tons of experience, but they may have simply chosen the D600 as their best fit, versus opting for one of the D1-D4 bodies.  different shooting styles, want of a lower-weight body, etc.

one should keep in mind dpreview hosts forums for all sorts of digital cameras.  they cannot be expanding everything endlessly so things are split up as best possible.

there is a "Pro Digital Talk" forum.  perhaps you can use that.  or did you want to be separate from the Canon 1D users too.

I think it would more relevant if we put the D600 in the consumer forum, and maintain this forum with D700, 800, D3 series, and D4. Whether we keep the D1 and D2 series in this forum or place them in the pro DX forum, is up for debate. What is the criteria for placement? Is it camera build, feature set, sensor size, or user profile, or a combination of several of these? Do we limit participation to a certain class of member?

I do know that pros use many of the Nikon's that are not D1-D4. The D700 is a killer event camera. The D800 is a monster studio camera. Both those cameras are very well built, have FX sensors and experience oriented feature sets. Is that the type of forum, we are looking for? I would think so. Unfortunately when a new camera comes out, that forum will also get noise. Remember when they came out with the D2H..."not enough pixels...the metering system...the focusing system!!!"

More likely a very slow D4 forum would result, with even less activity than "D400 rumors forums" (aka Nikon Pro DX) and a thriving D600-D800 forum. What's the point of that?

What really needs to be done is D1 and D2 DX cameras should be moved to DX forums. Crazy idea, I know.

I agree...to the Pro DX Forum. But I also think the D600 should be moved to a consumer forum that includes both FX and DX cameras. The user experiences of a D600 owner, is probably more akin to the owners of the D90, D7000 and the D5xxx series. Don't get me wrong; I am sure many D600 owners have a much higher experience level, but the camera was designed to target the enthusiast.
