LX7 RAW (RW2): Unable to open with with Photoshop Elements 10.

I just upgraded from an LX5 to an LX7. (The $299 price was too good to pass up!) Unfortunately, I haven't been able to open the RW2 files from this camera in Photoshop Elements 10 (Mac). My RW2 files from the LX5 open as they always did. DId Panasonic change something in the LX7 RAW file format? Are these files incompatible with PSE v10?

ANSWER:
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7 Pentax Optio V10

Mr H,

Only the latest versions of Adobe software handle the latest Panasonic RW2 files.

If you don't want to buy Adobe's far too expensive upgrades, just to get their software to handle the latest RAW files, you can instead use Adobe free DNG Converter to convert RW2 files (and folders of RW2 files) into DNG files that older versions of Adobe software will handle.

Version 7.3 of the DNG Converter will make DNGs out of the latest RW2 files, which should then work in Elements 10.

SirLataxe, who recommends you try the Silkypix V5.0.28 dedicated to Panasonic cameras instead.  See this thread:

Yes, Silkypix came with your camera. Use it!

I know nothing about Adobe's update policies, but for what it's worth, the PSE 11 trial I had loaded couldn't read the .rw2 files either.

Thanks for the reply. Adobe confirms that the LX7 requires Camera Raw 7.2 which is not compatible with PSE below v11. Apparently, PSE 11 comes with Camera Raw 7.1, which may explain why the trial version doesn't work with the LX7. A Camera Raw update to 7.2 should solve that issue. meanwhile, I'll give SilkyPix a try.

Thanks to all for the advice.

I tried to update the PSE11 but it failed in a way that suggested they don't allow trial versions to install updates. Very useful.

"I'll give SilkyPix a try."..........

I'm always surprised when folks don't realize that they have a very good RAW editor shipped with their cameras.

I think it may just be that people don't want to have to learn new software when they've invested time and effort in another package.

I almost bought Silkypix Pro 5 but after trying it didn't like it so am sticking with Adobe. I have been using Elements for years and more recently cs5 which of course does not handle FZ200 raw files.

It is easy and takes very little time and effort to convert to dng files and I will do that until I upgrade (If I ever do)

I really do not wish to learn a new software that does not seem to be nearly as user friendly  as the Adobe programs and only has a fraction of the functionality.

Yes Elements 11 will work well with your lx7 and the fz200 and will open the raw files from those cameras. Elements 10 or earlier will not open the raw files.

As for hardware requirements I'm sure that you can find that info on the adobe website

Not rocket science

All you need to do to answer this kind of question is google "photoshop elements 11 system requirements" or something of the sort. Asking others that kind of question bespeaks a kind of voluntary helplessness many people would be embarrassed to publish.

I should probably be sorry to be harsh, but I wonder why someone with normal capacities would behave that way.

But aside from all that, congratulations on your efforts to shoot and use raw.
