Sure...the day after I bought it! <grin>

So far, I'm agreeing with your "cons" especially on the AF points. What's up with that Sony?

Great overall score for A99: 84%

D800 84%

5D3 82%

A99 "It stands out as the only full frame camera to offer in-body stabilization, an EVF and articulated rear screen."  -- some of the main reasons I sold my D800 for A99

"Photographers looking for outstanding high ISO performance" -- outstanding?

Very nice. I hope the a99 last me a long time. With the image quality I am getting there is little reason to upgrade for a long time.

Well, no review would ever convince me to buy (or not to buy)  a camera. But for me the cons are encouraging - of the 8 listed, 4 relate to video, in which I have no interest as far as DSLRs are concerned.

Good job DPR this time. 84% is pretty much what I expected, Gold or Silver I could care little less since I already bought it. The only "pro" list missing is the AF-range feature. To my opinion it's the next "must-have" feature for all SLT camera.

Yes it's a very encouraging review and well written. Oh well, it certainly looks like it's time to replace the A900!

Cheers

Great review, but I will stay with my A77!

Lot of money to lay out, for me at least, it is not worth it. If I didn't already have an A77 I would most likely get it.

Good one.

A Gold award is a really good one., but the best part is the "impressive video specifications" in final conclusion, this will help to shut the troll with many names, until he find something new to speculate about though.

Congrats Sony.

You made a camera that gets better score than Nikons 800/Canon MK III is just impressive, hands down.

Will Sony ever catch up in the AF department?

So far, I'm agreeing with your "cons" especially on the AF points. What's up with that Sony?

Also...

"AF tracking accuracy lags behind its Nikon and Canon peers".

Will Sony ever catch up in the AF department?  I thought the live-view nature of the SLT would provide better AF capability (or that is what Sony claimed).

So far in my BIF shooting A99 has yield more keeper rate than my Canon 7D (which is known for its pro-grade AF performance). EVF "slide show" effect is very much suppressed thanks to "only" 6 FPS burst rate. With fast SD card such as Sandisk 95m/s card there is hardly any wait time between shots.

Now A99 should sell well?
In reply to Amadou Diallo, Dec 12, 2012

The first Sony SLT camera got "gold" sticker is A55 and it sold very well (something like 6 months of supply shortage), Not sure how A65 fared in market, at least A57 is selling well according to my "regular" Sony Store, let's see how many extra A99 this DPR golden sticker can sell during holiday season.

I rather enjoyed reading the review and am glad to see that not having an OVF isn't listed in the cons section, as that would have been asinine.  Reviews of course do not make decisions for me, especially here as I picked up the camera on release, it is nice to see a nicely written review that matches my personal observations and opinions.

Although it was posted later than expected, I'm definitely happy to see the review.  Thanks.

Yeap !

Here a short list of what they told about video IQ:

the A99 dPr test http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sony-alpha-slt-a99/22

Conclusions - pros [of dPreview about A99's video IQ]

  • impressive video specifications
  • Pleasing metering and white balance results
  • 1080p60 video specifications
  • Ability to output uncompressed HD video to an external recorder or monitor

[...] The A99 gives very good image quality, particularly so at high ISO sensitivities, placing it among the best performing full frame cameras we've seen to date [...]

[...] video performance of the A99 offers several advantages over its peers and none more apparent than its phase-detection AF system. Focus acquisition in video mode is brisk and object tracking can actually be an effective tool for subjects moving at slow to moderate speeds in a consistent direction. And Sony's well-regarded focus peaking option is among the best options we've seen yet for manual focus. Videographers, while perhaps lamenting the lack of magnified live view and histogram display will be pleased to see an uncompressed video over HDMI option as well as mic and headphone inputs along with an optional XLR mic adapter kit [...]

[...] While the ability to shoot uncompressed video at 60 fps may grab more attention, the full-time phase-detection AF of the A99 clearly sets it apart from its peers, producing the most effective AF system we've seen in a DSLR-style camera. And while video professionals are likely to opt for manual focus, enjoying Sony's focus peaking capability, there's little doubt that a fast, accurate AF holds appeal for still photographers wanting to get the most out of their video clips without having to re-train as a video focus puller. [...]

[...] The image quality of the A99's video output is very good, though as with any DSLR you'll need to keep an eye out for subjects that induce aliasing artifacts like moiré patterning [...]

Conclusions - cons [of dPreview about A99's video IQ]

  • [... empty]

What else?

[...] some moiré a tad [...] as with any DSLR [...]

Troll ending !

"With a 100% coverage and a 0.71x magnification its essentially the same size as the immense optical finder in the A900".

"The Sony SLT-A99 has a viewfinder magnification of 0.71x fractionally larger than the Nikon D-800 (0.70x) and falling shy *only* compared to the Canon EOS 1Dx (0.76x)".

*I supposed they mean only to the current cameras in the market since the A900 also has 100% coverage and with a 0.74x magnification noticeable bigger than the EVF used in the A99, A77, NEX-6 and NEX-7*.
