Please help on which lens Sigma 24-70 F2.8 hsm or Nikon 24-120 F4 VR
Dec 12, 2012

Group,

I need your help and advice on lens selection.

Going to be using as all around lens.

Currently I have the stock Nikon 24-85 VR variable Aperture.

What are the good, the bad, the ugly between the two lens.

I was thinking of the Nikon 24-70, but from all the reading, it is a great lens for studio and so on but not a all around walk around lens and the $$$.

Also, I do like the VR alot.

What reason do you think makes the Nikon 24~70 less good for walkabout? The same might apply to the Sigma. It's up to you which aspects you most need.

For me I chose the 24~120 for it's versatility and relatively light weight. I had also owned a 28~70mm f2.8 but sold it. It wasn't long enough for events and it was heavy as a walkabout (and not long enough). Vr can be useful too, though I don't see it as essential. I don't have f2.8 but if I need a fast lens I have several primes in the same range.

The Sigma vignettes heavily at f/2.8 throughout the range. even upto f/5.6.  As a walk around lens, if you're using it at f/4+, the 24-85 you have will be very good at stopped down apertures. The 24-120 is an amazing lens, and is a little more versatile that the 24-85.

The 24-120 is an excellent lens that I use all the time. The range is perfect for most everyday shooting, especially family and events. If you really think you would like a third party f/2.8 zoom for the same price I would go with the new Tamron over the Sigma. It has mostly positive reviews (I have not seen any where the Sigma is better) and also has VC, something Nikon and Sigma lack.

Well you've certainly answered your own question then. Any 24-70/2.8 variant will have even less reach. The 24-120/4 sounds like the perfect match assuming you want a constant aperture and only need a fair amount of extra reach. The next jump up in reach with VR is the 28-300 which is a considerably more compromised lens given it's huge focal length range.

With that said, have you considered adding a second lens like the 70-300VR? It's a cheaper option than the 24-120 and adds a lot more reach though it is a variable aperture. On the downside, it means swapping lenses when you need more than 85mm.

If you didn't have the 24-85VR already, the 24-120 would fit perfectly with your needs. Unless you have a use for two standard zooms, or plan to sell the 24-85, I'd spend some time thinking about this purchase.

With all due respect, I 'm not sure I would agree with that statement. I had a Sigma 24-70/2.8 for many years and never once had a problem with it. I recently went to a Nikon 24-70/2.8 but that was because of many other reasons.

The Cons of the lens were mainly the 82mm filter thread.  The focal length may be more suited to you of the 24-120 may be more suited to you but IMO there is nothing wrong with the Sigma.

Many of the photos here were taken with this lens http://www.pbase.com/windancer/novascotia and I had no complaints with it. I think the build quality of the Nikon lenses is maybe better than the Sigma's but

I don't have a 24-120 nor have I used that lens so I can't compare the two, I just wanted to say the Sigma lens served me well.Terry

I have the 24-120mm F4 VR lens and find it to be very sharp and a very useful range.  It is not too heavy, much lighter than the 24-70 from Nikon and less expensive.  Check out Mansurov's review of this lens.  I think his review is spot on.

1. I had the 28-300 and sold it, great lens but was not fast and does not like the variable Ap.

2. If I get the 24-120, the 24-85 will be up for sell.

3. I also sold the 70-300 ,, not fast and variable ap.

You should get along with the 24-120/4 quite well then. My wife and I use it as our standard zoom on a D3s and have no complaints (other than the occasional wish for f/2.8). The added reach is very useful.

If you need even more reach down the road, the 70-200/4VR that Nikon just introduced sounds like a great pick as well.

Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 is a great walk around lens...for me. I spent a whole day with it in Japan and I was able to capture all that I wanted. The only down side is it's really heavy! Too heavy to be carried around all day. I decided to rent a Nikon 24-120 f/4 and give it a try. The image quality is pretty good, heavy distortion though. The lens is lighter and has better zoom range for "walking around lens". However, its weight still isn't something I'd love to carry with me all day so I went with a Fuji X100.

I don't know about Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 HSM, but I have tried the cheaper version of it and I wasn't impressed. I'd rather save that money for a nice small prime.

I hate to say it, but you may have already answered your own question. You may need the length of a 24-120/4 lens. I admit I have never used one, but from everything I have seen and heard based on other's posts it's a fine lens and worth looking into.

After rereading some of the earlier posts, I basically reinterated what joejack951 had said, as I said the 24-120/4 may be the coorect lens for your situation.
