Full 24mp image from Tokina 12-24mm on a D600???
Dec 12, 2012

I am a bit perplexed. My dad has recently purchased a D600. He has used the Tokina 12-24mm with it, which is a DX-format lens. He has the camera set to use DX crop mode. Yet the images I have seen from this combo are coming in as FULL 24mp images (as indicated by the EXIF data) with NO vignetting. Detail, color and contrast are precisely what you would expect from this lens.

This makes no sense at all to me. How is this even possible?!?!?!? Theses should be the roughly 10mp or so DX cropped images, not 24mp images. Ok...not like he is complaining about it though.

Is anyone else using this combo? Are you getting full 24mp images?

Thanks in advance,

Schaf

I'm not familiar with that lens specifically but many DX wide angle zooms will cover the FX sensor at the longer focal lengths.  Are the pictures closer to the 24mm end than 12mm?  It shouldn't cover the frame at 12mm.

I will have to check on the focal length. My dad is in another state for the winter and I "iChat" with him on the Mac and share his screen when working on images with him in Aperture and this is how I discovered he was getting full 24mp images. I will check on the focal length. I should have him shoot some at 12mm and some at 24mm and see what happens

Thanks,

Schaf

How are you determining that the images are the full 24mp? Do the show a 6016 x 4016 resolution or 3936 x 2624 (DX Crop) ?

Hi Schaf.

I've been using the Tokin 12-24 f/4 DX on a D800E with the camera set to auto DX-crop mode. The D800 does not see the Tokina as DX lens so it works as though it was an FX lens. The vignetting appears and increases as you widen the focal length to 12mm but does not seem significant at 24mm. I manually set the camera crop to DX mode so that there is no vignetting at any focal length.

Regards,

The EXIF data, as displayed by Aperture, is showing a pixel dimension of 6016 x 4016. And this is what has me perplexed.

I will have to have my dad take some shots at different focal lengths to see where the lens starts to vignette. That said, I am still perplexed by the fact that he claims to have set the camera in DX crop mode. He is using the original Tokina 12-24mm lens without the BIM so perhaps there is something with the data the lens is sending the camera that is amiss here?

That lens can be used in FF mode from 18-24 w/o vignetting. You will get full pixels.

17mm without filters and hood. I use it on my D800. Great lens.

I got the Tokina 11-16 DX. Vignetting is not an issue at 16mm.

Examples - 12-24 on FF
In reply to schaf, Dec 12, 2012

If it really was 24MP, then it was shot in FX mode, and if it was in FX mode it couldn't have been wider than about 18mm. So it could be possible from 18mm to 24mm, although I think 19-24 is more likely if a hood was used, if you saw no vignetting.

Here are some examples from my Tokina 12-34 on my D700 from a couple years ago:

12mm

15mm

18mm (with hood)

19mm

20mm

Yes, I tried tokina 12-24 (screwdrive) and found it is usable from 15 mm with 4:5 ratio or 1,2x crop but with  some corner shading.

After 19 mm there is fullframe coverage with no visible vignetting at all and surprisingly good image quality in center and acceptable corner quality.

Even single 77mm filter adds visible vignetting.

So in emergency you can use 12-24dx as 18-24fx lens.
