Show Your Snaps...December 10, 2012

We invite you again to show your own snapshots or even choice pictures. Remember it's all about the enjoyment of taking pictures regardless of what we have. We can learn from each other and it's fun to share too.

When you are posting your own images please submit them as a reply to this post. Otherwise your pictures may be overlooked. See my own photos for this week as a reply.

We will start a new thread for this every week now due to the popularity. I'll be sure to comment also to your images, if you choose to share. Thanks everyone for your participation.

Trying out a new macro flash setup...
In reply to Digirame, 5 months ago

I think I now have the field macro rig I've always dreamed of (this side of an MT-24EX ) - 100L in AI Servo and a 270EX II on a magic arm with a homemade diffuser (not shown):

A couple of test shots on Sunday:

Digirame's Photos
In reply to Digirame, 5 months ago

Despite light rain a good part of the weekend, I still managed to get outdoors.  I decided to go to the zoo again.  It was fun playing around with the cameras, where I sometimes used ISO6400 indoors without a flash.

Photo No. 1 - This is one of the areas of the zoo, where there is a little bit of a view.

Photo No. 2 - Another time while it was beginning to rain, I snapped this one off from another viewpoint, showing the zoo lights on the trees.

Photo No. 3 - One of the first places I wanted to visit was the elephants.  I heard they had another baby elephant, but I was unable to see it.

Photo No. 4 - Here's a closer view.  These elephants were young.  I didn't know they had so many small ones.

Photo No. 5 - While I was looking at the giraffes, I was happy it wasn't raining.

Photo No. 6 - The smaller giraffe is seen eating from a feed bin.

Photo No. 7 - Here's a closer view, taken with the easy-to-use 55-250mm IS lens.

Photo No. 8 - Some more zoo lights can be seen here.  I wanted to stay around to see the zoo lights, but as the rain started to intensify, I decided to leave for the day.  I'll have to visit another time for those lights.  They have them every year during the Christmas season, so I still have time for that.

That's a nice looking setup.  The photos are very good also...nice colors.  I hadn't thought of using a flash for my macro pictures previously.  With the brand I was using before and a telephoto lens, I was able to take photos of flying insects rather well, but I had to have good sunlight.  I like your idea of using a flash.

Out of Focus Christmas Lights
In reply to Digirame, 5 months ago

It's hard to follow Wilba this week!

My pictures are to illustrate the effects you can sometimes create with out of focus images.

First, the original scene properly focused.

Second, the image mildly out of focus, notice the small highlights.

Third, farther of focus.  Notice the dots get bigger.

Finally, very far out of focus the dots are now quite large.

Thanks for viewing.

Dave

That's very good.  I know a lot of us are trying to keep things in focus, but that is a time that out-of-focus pictures can look good too.

Thanks! It takes a bit of editing to get them looking that good.

It's a very old idea, I can't take any credit for it.

The flash gives you an extremely short effective shutter duration (like 1/10,000 sec?), so you never get any camera motion blur. It also gives very consistent and predictable lighting. This setup requires very little mucking around with FEC down to 1:1. In my experience once you get past 1:1 things get weird and you need to use manual flash, but I haven't gone there yet with this setup. The 100L performs beautifully in AI Servo, and has transformed the way I do macro.

Thanks. I enjoyed your OOF shots. Have you tried putting a cut-out over the front of the lens to make shapes?

Thank you.  Personally, I've never tried it but I did a post somewhere where someone had cut out heart shapes and taken a picture of their dog.  It's a neat effect.

I've been into OOF highlights and that lighting set up is actually my neighbor across the street.

As I have already stated great Macro photos, would you show the homemade diffuser (not shown).

Re: Offshore O&G at dusk
In reply to Digirame, 5 months ago

Good day, these are two of a few photographs taken last week while I was on work conducting some work from a vessel offshore my country. The installation pictured is a complex of production and drilling platforms called Teak Alpha and Teak Echo. They are one of the older platforms in Trinidad and Tobago and has changed hands between operators a few times over the years, now being owned and operated by Repsol.

My shots were taken with the T2i and 18-55 kit lens, shot RAW and edited with basic PP in LR3. The sunset is what got my attention and I found the setting quite beautiful with the burnt orange sky, it was quite vivid in reality.I was a little late in the response with my camera as the sun had set so quickly I could hardly take my time and compose my shot, the last photograph I tried to lift some detail in the foreground with out washing out the sunset.

Teak A and E complex, offshore East Coast Trinidad.

View from the vessel I was sailing on, Bollard and mooring rope in the foreground.

Thanks for looking,

Kind regards

Ziad

Sure. I'm away from home for a few days so it won't be before the weekend.

Hi Guys... I am not sure if I should be posting my pis here. I had used HDR Software to get some nice effects. This is the first time I am tryin HDR.Really dont know if its good or bad? Some photographers dont like it at all and may call it as cheating. Thats what i read on the net.

Your comments and criticism willl be appreciated.
