Canon 6D might be of interest to D600 purchasers

(D700, D300s, D7000 user)
Canon brought a 6D with them to a roadshow this morning. It was pre-production so they wouldn't let any cards be inserted.
The body was light and seemed quite well-built. It only has one card slot, of course (boo!) but it does have a 'magnify' button that can be used to perform instant zoom to a level that you have pre-configured. Therefore, it has an instant zoom on playback button that the D600 does not, and which one poster lamented (we have it on D300s, D700, D800) but not on D7000 or D600.
I am keenly awaiting reviews and image samples from the 6D although at the moment it is too expensive (give it a month?!).

It depends how important instant zoom on playback is to people. For some it's irrelevant. For others, it's essential, as per these previous threads:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3290957
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3270184#forum-post-42539722
We now have the odd position of Nikon NOT allowing instant zoom playback on a FF camera and Canon offering it instead (the reverse of the previous situation).

I played with a couple as well. The problem for me with Canon has always been the ergonomics. The 6D fits my hand weird as well. They had 2, one with a grip and one without. Unfortionatley they had a large lens on the one without the grip but it seemed like sizewise it could be a good travel camera. I was a bit shocked that it only did 4fps but that's hardly a deal breaker. They wouldn't put a card in these either so some of the functionality was limited.

I will scrap all my Nikon lenses investment and lose thousands to invest in a new system with a cheaper (in all aspects) body.
Nahhh, I'll pass

Nikon put itself in an odd position, indeed. Since Nikon is very carefully watching what Canon is doing I will not be surprised if next D600 firmware update will have one-button-press 100% zoom functionality enabled.

Well, you know how that goes - Canon cameras always feel weird to Nikon users, while Canon users always say Nikon cameras are the ones that feel weird. And whoever has inferior sensors claims their camera has better skintones..

Canon has not been watching what Nikon has been doing, that's why they are so far behind on EVERYTHING in DSLRs. Sorry I take that back, Canon 6D has the instant zoom button Nikon D600 doesn't. Now that got me thinking, maybe I should switch to Canon.:-P

Actually, it might have been Nikon deliberate strategy all along. First they had came out with D800 with 36MP. Then they released D600 which is a great camera in its own right. In order to protect D800 sales they deliberately handicapped few things in D600 firmware. Yet, if Canon chooses to include the feature in 6D, Nikon can reciprocate with a firmware update. Cynical but smart.Ā

I think Nikon offers other features which make up for the difference, like better AF.

I see your POV but IMO it's the exact opposite: it would be very much out of character for Nikon to offer key features in its firmware updates. Nikon usually limits the updates to bug fixes or minor improvements.

I just don't think that Nikon will add extra features in a fw updates. When have they done that? They charged quite a sum to increase the buffer of the D3, if I remember. Canon updated the 7D with a fw update but it was minor boosts in productivity.
|
Of course (in particular those with no investment in any system)

And the 100% shortcut is really useful. But there other key features as well: the AF sensor, much better on D600, the sensor itself in terms of DR (extrapolation based on D800 vs. 5d3), etc.

I too dismissed the Canon and agree it's price is too high right now.
On the other hand it's a bit early to call it in any way esp autofocus I've learnt the hard way in that having tons of AF points does not always mean better more accurate AF, or a better spec sheet making a better end user experience.
Unless of course 6d's arrive with oil splats on the sensorĀ

It seems that D600 sales have been below stellar. And 6D introduction will put extra pressure. Besides, D800 novelty has worn off and its sales slowed down. The jury is still out but I shall not be surprised if Nikon adds new easily implementable features via a D600 FW upgrade.
Single-button-press full zoom is an important feature for some users and it is trivial to implement in FW. A pure marketing decision on Nikon's part indicative of how much they care about their user base.

yes, that is a potential problem in a different class than a zoom button.
Personally I can hardly belive the level of handholding many users seems to be dependent on.
If they cant zoom to 100 percent in playback with one click they find a camera unusable, or the EVF crowd that dont trust themselves to make a decent shot without "seeing what the sensor sees".

I am not privy to Nikon's marketing decisions. Whatever I say about Nikon strategy is a pure speculation on my part. But from what I read in this forum and elsewhere makes me think that Nikon's strategy has been to wrestle market share away from Canon. And both D800 and D600 were introduced with this aim in sight. Unfortunately, both were a mixed success mainly because of real or perceived QC problems and poor PR handling of those issues. I understand that putting new features in FW update is out of Nikon's character. But marketing war is still a war and you learn to adapt. IIRC, nikonrumors mentioned few weeks ago that forthcoming D600 FW update will address the single-button-zoom.

Where do you get that information from? The D800 was selling like hot cakes for months and months after launch, only recently has the price fallen. The D600 was priced too high for what it is, I think almost everyone agrees with that.
