my God we need a moderator

I cant believe that we don't have some form of moderation in this forum..DPR could be much better if it had that Mods
but i will say that that last couple of days we have had some really great informative threads that have had decent non abusive replies...perhaps we may be back to some sort of-normality until the next new DSLR ?
just a two cents post I know..but i wanted to share non the less

What we don't need is more threads like this. Please, you and everyone else, stop. Stick to interesting topics related to camera gear, not thread after thread of pointless metadiscussion about moderation and forum quality. YOU and everyone else making threads like this are part of the problem.

Agree, I hate being moderated. I also hate censorship for anyone of age.

You think this is bad, you should see the Sony forum.
There are trolls who base their entire living by attacking specific products or forums. A sad but harsh reality of life on the internet(s) I'm afraid.

We don't need more rules, we just need enforcement of what rules exist.
Right now everyone treats the rules like speed limits. It should be that these rules are enforced and not just a joke, like how everyone drives ABOVE the speed limit because it's a joke.
Just start banning people for breaking the rules, keep a database on who keeps getting banned for a day or a week; and once they hit a reasonable threshold they are permanently banned.
This place could be polite and the trolls flushed in a single month!

Im glad to see the ignore button is working well..I decided to ignore Zardox posts a while back because of his acid tone..and if Prime shooter hadnt quoted him id never known he was there.
but you know what I agree with him on irrelevant posts and almost wish I hadn't started this one ..

Intersesting take, since many of us consider you a troll - albeit a 'high-content', stealth troll.
You're just too confrontational and illogical to be a real life-match persona. You exist to proclaim your opinions loudly and irrationally, to denounce other's work (without ever showing your own, because in your words it's "too good", heh :)) and to insert yourself into discussions where you think you can introduce the most mayhem.
I guess I should congratulate you on not getting banned yet.... but time will tell.

Agree completely- the forums on photo.net are moderated and far far better for it.

I don't see any excessive or abusive behavior in this forum. From time to time there are some weird threads ... but so what. That's real life.
I've seen strictly regulated/moderated forums which then resulted in some kind of over-ultra polite and political correct speech. Most paragraphs then start with something like : "with all due respect ..."
I love this forum the way it is.

I dont think most want a moderator, look at the number of discussions on threads such as those started by Neil Jones
People just want other people moderated. People always think that they are right so it will be others that are judged.
But just dont comment if something annoys you. The ignore button is good but then totally counterproductive if one chooses to let the forum know that they 'accidentally' have put somebody on ignore, as in the case above - why let Zardoz know you put him on ignore, wont that surely just antagonise him, or is that the point? In that case you're not ignoring him, you're belittling him whilst cupping your hands over your ears so you apparently can't hear anything in retort
I dont think those that call for moderation actually want moderation, I think they just want attention, like Neil Jones
(and yes I am aware of the irony of posting in a reply on such a thread after suggesting one should ignore provocative threads :-))

LOL - Any of these look familiar???
NeilJones and Karl Timmerman are spamming/stalking this forum
I noticed that you were highly involved (and antagonistic) in at least one, if not both. I also note they got closed/deleted by the mods
Hmmm....Thank god for the moderators.

The forum is in a sad state indeed. Out of the ten "top posters" in the forum, it turns out that I have ignored nine. When nine out of ten of a forum's most active participants write posts that are either aggression or trolling or drivel of little value, then something is really bad.
Currently, it helps no one else that I ignore them, and I do not benefit from other people's ignore actions. There could be some automatic way of pushing these people to oblivion. Let's say that if more than X people ignore a poster A during a certain month, then his or her posts will only be displayed with very low probability. Next month, they are displayed more frequently, but if more people ignore him or her again during that month, the posts are pushed away again.
And, please, let us have the thumbs down back. They could also be used to gently push out people whose posts everyone else considers annoying and useless. Once a post gets 10 or 20 thumbs down, there is no reason to keep it at the forum display at all.

"People just want other people moderated. People always think that they are right so it will be others that are judged."
- this is not what moderating does. Moderating in its most basic definition removes the "no, YOU'RE a troll" aspect of forum commentary, excises ad hominem attacks, keeps the discussion on topic as per the forum guidelines , and generally stops the online psychological warfare waged by non-contributors. And there are many here. As I said, the forums on photo.net are moderatetely moderated, and far, far better for it.

the 'thumbs down' was the best thing
In reply to Tommot1965,

When you could 'thumbs down' a message, the rather bad ones or trolls where quickly exposed. It was very easy to see how all those comments that make a forum bad were not appreciated here, because the majority was giving them the thumbs down.
I thought it had an overall positive effect as it gave me confidence that the majority does not agree and does not want those those. Being able to give it a thumbs down was enough to voice your opinion. Without that option people feel more inclined to reply to those silly comments which directs more attention them, unfortunately. :-/
