I have to laugh...

Coming from the Nikon world over to the m43 world has been a nice experience - so many small, fast high quality lenses and image quality has me shooting more than I have in years. I still like to pop over to the Nikon boards once in a while just to keep track of what's happening in that world.
Anyway, a thread caught my attention; something along the line of "taking a trip to Disney Land and taking a D4, what's the best carry around lens?" ????
Seriously, a D4 as a carry around tourist camera? Wow, just wow!

They don't expect to need shallow DOF, so no need to take the Hasselblad.

This past May I saw a guy walking around the Louvre with a Canon 1D series camera and the 100-400L, and he was no pro. Just shrugged my shoulders and walked on with my E-P3, 12/25/45 prime setup.
Think of it as jewelry. The bigger the chain....

I don't understand why you find this funny. Personally, I can't understand why people their 'good' cameras and lenses at home when they go on vacation.
All of my vacations are literally once in a lifetime trips because life is too short to return to the same place twice. Why wouldn't you take your best equipment?
I'm in modest shape so I have no problem carrying my gear aound.
However, I also never take more than I carry on my back all day period. Even when I went to Costa Rica for 3 weeks in the spring everything fit into one backpack that I could shoulder all day.

Because they weigh a ton and ruin a family vacation where you have to walk around a lot and it is hot.

Becuase the other, light weight equipment takes pictures that are indistinguishable, and the extra DOF is highly desirable in "Disneyland" shots.

Not everyone is.
Also, you are not in as good shape as you think.

If you are on a family vacation, you need to carry other stuff on your back, e.g. tired kids!
Doesn't sound like you are every really been on a "family vacation".

I'm just pointing out how people view things differently. I've my gear for hours at a time in very hot climates so I understand the discomfort invloved.

Becuase the other, light weight equipment takes pictures that are indistinguishable, and the extra DOF is highly desirable in "Disneyland" shots.
Are you claiming the output from a D4 is indistinguishable from a m4/3 camera?
Depth Of Field isn't the only difference between a D4 and m4/3 camera.
I'm in modest shape so I have no problem carrying my gear aound.
Not everyone is.
Also, you are not in as good shape as you think.
I realize I'm not a superstar. I need to lose ~25 pounds. Many people are in much better shape than myself, but I run 5 km (~3 miles) in under 25 minutes 4 days a week and bench my own body weight.
I believe I have a pretty good handle on my level of fitness since I hit the gym 5 days a week, and get annual medical check-ups.
However, I also never take more than I carry on my back all day period. Even when I went to Costa Rica for 3 weeks in the spring everything fit into one backpack that I could shoulder all day.

I think our ideas of 'family vacation' are just different. Hopefully everyone can agree that shouldn't prompt us to laugh at one another.
I just don't understand why it's ok to laugh at person who wishes to travel with a camera that was an expensive investment.
Do you feel better about your choices when you laugh at people who make different choices?

I saw a guy in a museum with a large Canon kit around his neck, and he was taking a picture of a sculpture with his cell phone! I tried to catch the shots with my camera but wasn't quick enough. Pretty funny looking, though.

What's wrong with taking a D4 to Disney Land?
I use to take one to Vegas all the time, until my bad back told me otherwise.
Then I decided the iPhone was all I needed most of the time.
If you're not a professional on paid assignment, who needs a fancy expensive camera for snaps anyway. Right?
With a cell phone even photography can be fun

Went I wen to Disney, there were DSLRs everywhere. I carried an E-PM1 in my cargo shorts along with several lenses and my wife took, with out any issues, an A65 and super-zoom.
Still, the D4 is way too big.

get my vote for the fine sarcasm and the "photographer" reality check.
I just imagined you walking down a Punta-kana beach and totally agree with you.
At such moment then what is more important : freedom in your hands and shoulders, or an obligation to "register" the beautiful moment with the "best" and heaviest camera ?
You either hold hands with your wife and kids or carry your "cross".
I bet the wife and kids will remember forever that moment you spent together and not the camera you carried with you then.
