Which SD card for Pentax K-30?

Hello I'm new here,

I just ordered a K-30, my first DSLR and I am wondering which is the best SD card to get in terms of transfer speed.

I'll probably choose Sandisk and if so can the K-30 actually utilise the Extreme Pro at 90MB/s?

Or should I choose:

Ultra @ 30MB/s

Extreme @ 45MB/s

Thanks.

Re: Which SD card for Pentax K-30?

I have a SanDisk Ultra 16Gb loaded in the K-30. It takes 6 RAW frames in Continuous Shooting mode. According to camera specs, this is the expected result.

I don't think a faster card would improve anything.

You are right that a faster card would not improve the continuous shooting rate until the camera buffer is full, but a faster card can improve the rate at which that buffer is flushed and thus the full buffer rate.

Assuming the K30 is anything like the K5, I did some testing with a Extreme Pro and Compared it to some other cards that I had.

Re: Which SD card for Pentax K-30?

Thanks everyone,

I know the faster the K-30 can write its buffer or cache to the card the better, meaning that once I take 6 continuous shots they will be transferred to the card and I can take another 6 continuous shots quicker again.

I read the K-30 is compatible with SDXC and Lexar have up to 600x in this format. If only I could know the K-30's ultimate transfer speed to SD cards.

My computer only has USB 2.0 so I don't need the fast card for this transfer purpose.

I don't even have the camera yet as they are obviously popular and currently sold out.

Re: Which SD card for Pentax K-30?

With my K30, I get 10 or 11 RAW* on Continuous Hi - my SanDisk Extreme 45mb/s cards clear the buffer in about 8 seconds from last shot;the 30mb/s ones seem to take a second or so longer, the 20mb/s ones pretty much the same, c 10s- might just be my error in measuring. Other class 10 cards take longer- 15s and up for some of them, although my Innov8 class 10(which was bundled with my K5) is just as fast as the San Disck Extreme 45!

I have pretty much standardised on the SanDisk Extreme 30 0r 45 MB/s now, they are not expensive (as the Pro version is now top of the range) and I have never had a problem with any of my SanDisk cards

Thank you Stephen,

I think I'll order a Sandisk 45MB/s for now seeing as the 95MB/s is very pricey at this time of writing. I'll put the money saved towards a UV or polarised filter for the 18-55 WR lens that I am waiting on.

It would be interesting to compare the 45MB/s and 95MB/s to compare buffer clearance times.

If it's of any help imaging resource tested the K-30 performance with a SanDisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s UHS-I card, they say it took 5 seconds to clear on Continuous Hi mode RAW (8 frames). See here http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/pentax-k30/pentax-k30A6.HTM

Also Rob Galbraith does some tests on cameras and sd cards here http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/camera_wb_multi_page.asp?cid=6007-12454

Re: Which SD card for Pentax K-30?

That is interesting, see also the other post re the 95MB/s card- does seem to be a bit of an advantage there....my results from other brands such as Transcend seem more variable than the SanDisk cards, for instance I have two 16Gb Transcend class 10's, one with a black label and one a yellow, and the black labelled one clears about twice as fast, about 8 s again. As SanDisk cards are not that much more than the other makes, but seem to be labelled better and to be more consistend, I will try them. The RAW buffer on the K30 is a lot smaller than the K5, so buffer clearance times are more of an issue.

If you are in the UK Simon, I would say that it is worth having a look at MyMemory UK-  I have used them a fair bit over the past few years and they are well-priced and quick to respond, and I've never had a problem with lost items (I think they are Channel Island based) unlike several other major internet retailers where I have had packages opened in tranist and cards stolen on more than one occasion.

Re: Which SD card for Pentax K-30?

I am in Belfast Stephen and have used MyMemory before,

I have used Play and never had anything stolen from anyone.

I think I will get the 8GB Sandisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s from Play for £15.80p

If RAW file sizes are 14MB maximum I'll get approximately 500 photos which is plenty for now. I can always get a 32GB or whatever in the future.

I can always use the Extreme Pro as a specialist fast buffer clearance card.

There was just a thread on this, you want as fast as possible 'write' speed.

Re: Which SD card for Pentax K-30?

Sounds good. The 16gb cards show 612 available shots in RAW on my K30, but actually I get nearer 640. Enjoy the camera it is a good'un, if the buffer was bigger it would replace my K51

Re: Which SD card for Pentax K-30?

Looks like you're getting some good feedback.

My experience with my K5 leads me to recommend Extreme III or equal or better.  I purchased a Sandisk Ultra and was quite disapointed with its slower performance.  It's in my bag only as a backup should I run out of space on my Extreme III cards.

Re: Youtube video testing Sandisk 95MB/s Extreme Pro versus Sandisk 30MB/s Extreme III

Thanks. Big difference between the Pro and Extreme III based on the video. If they did the same test with an Ultra, would probably take a minute or so (wild speculation on my part) to clear buffer. They make a good point in the video that the Pro card would be especially important for sports shooting.

Re: Which SD card for Pentax K-30?

I wrote the other post showing you need fast write time in the field. However I should have been more clear, I said no video SDHC interface. Your K30s, K5, and so on, have much better/faster interfaces and can take more advantage of Sandisk Extreme cards. The SD card field is growing (interfaces) and getting more confused. Just get a class 10 and all is OK. Yea a Sandisk might buy a bit more speed but.  No a Sandisk may buy a lot more speed. Only you guys can test SD cards.

OP, go with the ones proven (times) in other cameras of your type, not test charts.
