Just about to buy the NEX-6 when....

I was just about to pull the trigger on a new NEX-6 kit - my first mirrorless camara - when I saw that Amazon has the NEX-7 kit (Used - like new) for less than the NEX-6 new...

So I'm asking - as much as I know people hate to say one is better than the other - which one should I buy?

I like the compact size of the new 6 kit lens and I do plan to use it while traveling overseas. But I am suduced by the 24mp and better image quaility...

I'm a newb to this forum, but I was curious what people thought about the 6 vs 7 personally, I am thinking about upgrading and I was wondering which way to go.  Although there does seem to be some people who don't particularly like the new 6's power zoom lens

I'd go, as I did, for the NEX-7. It's still the flagship NEX and the PDAF isn't so important to me, but tri-navi, 24MP, and the metal body all were.

I picked the nex-6 after researching because of the 16MP having an advantage over the 24MP in low light IQ which was more important to me than the different in MP, which is indeed BIG.

Wifi which comes in handy like using my phone as a remote and for selfshots, etc.

The Applications, open up interesting possibilities.

Phase Detection was also very important to me.

And cheaper price in my case.

But at the same price, it all depends on what YOU need from the camera.

I did the same thing and ordered the 7 from Amazon. I mainly shoot landscape and I don't think the ISO is that bad. Use Dpreview image comparison to compare. When you use such high ISO there may be less noise with the 6 but you also loose dynamic range. Plus it's built better. The six is new and in a few months the price will drop but the 7 at these prices will remain steady.

It's used.  Keep that in mind.

Used, and is it even from Amazon?  Probably from a 3rd party "marketplace" seller.

At any rate, tough choice.  Ultimate IQ probably goes to the Nex-7, but I'd be tempted to go for the 6 just to get the better AF -- probably a more practical choice for most use.

It's from Amazon Warehouse deal with the 30 day return period so if it's not in great shape you have time to check it out and return. The used like new are cheaper than the body only 6 also. Who knows in 30 days just before Xmas the 6 could be on sale for $100.00 less than today.

Well,

It's a hard decision. I’ve bought this kind of “used” before and had a really good experience so am not too swayed by that issue one way or the other.

I am going to use the camera for travel so I assume that there will be some low light situations, plus the compact size makes the 6 a better choice for me. But the better build of the 7 also seems to make sense for use on the road. I wish that the re-designed 7 was officially announced. But I can’t wait that long…

So I plan to order the new 6 kit. It's a starting point and I guess I will see where it takes me...

Thanks for the feedback...

You have to ask yourself which is more important:

sensor resolution capability (providing you buy the few lenses that can keep up with it)

better build

more buttons (hence less access to the menu)

or:

PDAF (faster focus in certain conditions)

smaller kit lens (that can't be bought separately for now, and that doesn't worth $350 in any case)

new

wifi (if you find this interesting to you)

Personally, I went for the NEX 6, because of the compactness of the kit lens and the PDAF.

Keep in mind that the 6 and the 7 have a lot in common, including the same size and pretty much the same weight.

You probably know this already - but the NEX-6 is $899 at Sony - with free shipping and a (cr*p) camera bag - if you have n educational e-mail (.edu).

How do you shoot?
In reply to Wicked Pigeon, 6 months ago

If I was mainly a landscape photographer, I'd get the 7.

If I was a street photographer and/or shot in dim nightspots, I'd get the 6.

If I did both I'd flip a coin. Or I just might get the 7 and an RX100 if the pennies allowed

I never experienced a NEX-7, but NEX-6 is a really enjoyable tool, and for me, photography it's all about fun, hobbies and entertainment.

Have fun with one of them

both cameras are EXACTLY the same size, but the 6 weighs less

It is an absolute no brainer, go with the top of the line 7 and get ALL of its advantages

What about ALL of the NEX-6's advantages?  What is a no-brainer for one person might not be for another.

I prefer NEX-6 over 7. Here is why.
In reply to Wicked Pigeon, 6 months ago

BTW, I had 7, now have had 6 since last Friday.

Here are the reasons I prefer 6 over 7:

1. I found the trinav on 7 confusing. With 2 identical dials on the top is very confusing to me. Granted I am a casual shooter. More serious shooters may get used to them and can tell them apart better. I like 6's single dial on top plus the dial on the back layout better. I also prefer the physical mode dial on 6 better than software mode dials implementation on other NEXes.

2. I like 16 MP is more than adequate to me. 24MP means nothing to me.

3. I may use the WIFI eventually. so it is nice to have that feature on 6.

Also, used camera's warranty is questionable. It is safer to get a new one.

thats what makes horse racing so interesting

someone will always bet on the illogical choices

The NEX 7 is clearly the best of the class no exceptions, tri navi is a major advantage, not to mention 24mp of power (a no brainer), but I guess thats what makes horse racing...........

there's always someone with a differing opinion

Chck out Steve Huff's hands on

http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2012/10/11/the-sony-nex-6-1st-quick-look-review/

He seems to favor the 6 : snappier, faster AF, lighter, 16MP hits the mark, it's an improved 7 ...

If price is the same I'd tend to lean towards the 6 (prefer the regular flash mount and the lighter weight + new AF + better high ISO noise)

I'd get the 7 if I get a better deal than the 6 (7 has 24mp, not sure about tri-navi)

Cheers,

Re: Just about to buy the NEX-6 when....

its simple the NEX 6 compares well to the 5 series and seriously falls short in everything when compared to the flagship NEX 7, no matter what anyone says about low light, etc I have a C3, a 5N and a 7 all wonderful, but the NEX 7 is head and shoulders above the other two. I used a NEX 6 a friend of mine had for a day and returned and found it equal to my 5n, no better( or even different in most ways). I think the wifi is a useless feature that was added so as to differentiate the new cameras from the preceeding series and adds nothing to the camera as such. I can not tell in real terms if there is actually any difference in the output of the new 16mp sensor from the older one as when I compared the same pictures there was no difference i could see, even on a 65" screen

There is no contest, especially for close to the same money, the NEX 7 is still the champ. I imagine when the 7n or whatever they will call it next year comes out it will be a cheaper build and use the same sensor while adding wifi and maybe something else that we don't need to take good pictures. I expect that the full frame NEX will be my next camera
