A fairly compact, 25mm lens. Maybe half the size of the current Panasonic 25?

Aperture - 1.8 or 2.0, either would work

Features - Weathersealing! Macro would be a bonus

Build - Either metal and expensive with a distance scale like the 12 or inexpensive and plastic like the 45. I would buy it either way.

Colour - Black. is this really too much to ask for?

Anyone else have a lens dream for m4/3?

Well, since we're dreaming...

a 7 - 300 f1.4, metal body that size/weight is the same as the 14-35 and measures "perfect"

Other than that, I'm pretty damn happy with the 75 1.8!

Universal Zoom 11-220/1.2 through... compact, not bigger than my 14-45...with internal zoom... and Macro... and sealing all around... and at last OIS for those who need it ( I do not).

Yes, I want it to be priced not more than $800. If others think that my dream is too expensive, I'll edit price tag for free.

a 17.5mm, af, either o12/2.0 or o75/1.8 in looks, definitely with the snap focus ring tho, f1.2, tons of cctv character(super sharp center, high contrast, far less quality on edges), buttery smooth and large focus ring, there would also be a focus tab... FOCUS TAB!

....... i want a focus tab D:

edit

oh yeah weathersealed too!

Dream: 17-25mm f/0.95 step zoom or even 14-25mm.  Doesn't have to be 0.95, but at the very least 1.8.

Practical: 14-42x pancake... without issues.

This was my first thought except I went with 7-400

150 1.4 with OIS would be nice.

The 20mm f1.7 comes close to your spec - put a plastic bag around it and it' perfect.

You can't really have a proper macro lens and compactness. Close focusing maybe but 1-1, not really.

Exactly: macro's never are pancakes....far from it. So forget about that one. If you drop that, the Panny 20 mm 1.7 is your lens i guess.

When m43 was first announced
In reply to Acrill, Nov 14, 2012

I envisioned a set of three primes that would fit in a back pocket sized box.

The box would have built in back caps to hold the lenses securely and reduce need for juggling.

The lenses would be no bigger than the 14/2.5, but would be at least F2 and very sharp

14, 20, 40mm?

Well, we got the 14mm, but the 20mm is too big, there's no pancake 40mm, and no slim box for the set...

Haven't gotten a trimmed down m43 version of the 12-60 either (the 12-50 falls short in several areas)

If this lens gets made and is of good optical quality, i.e. matching the existing primes at similar FL and aperture settings, there will be a substantial number of people buying it even if they sell it at 10x your stated price, provided it is not more than 1.5 kg.

Think about it. A less than 2 kg system with a 20x f1.2 zoom of true wide angle and true telephoto coverage and full M4/3 picture quality. Macro and sealing provisions too. How much would it be worth? Less than 10k? A bargain!

A lot of people have more than 10k each invested in photographic equipment collections without this coverage.

Just look at the long end of the zoom you specified. That is equivalent to 440mm F2.4. How much is a 400mm F2.8 nowadays?

For people who buy cameras and lenses as jewellery, the large front glass of such a lens must be irresistible.

12-35mm F2.0-F3.5 with IS and internal zoom and with continuous aperture control
In reply to Valentinian, Nov 14, 2012

12-35mm F2.0-F3.5 with IS and internal zoom and with continuous aperture control

I don’t need a constant focal ratio. I just need one that has continuous aperture control while doing videos. However, it does need to have good IS for videos with my Panasonic cameras.

A lot of people ask for things like a constant focal ratio lens not really realizing what that actually will do. If you have a constant focal ratio zoom lens then you are sacrificing some of the aperture on the wide end in order to keep it constant. That is a foolish thing to do but it is probably easier to do that than it is to make the aperture adjustments smooth and continuous while zooming.

That is probably why the 12-35mm doesn’t have smooth aperture adjustments and the 35-100mm does and why the 35-100mm is that much more expensive.

Both of those lenses are constant focal ratios. However, the 35-100mm lens is the only one that is useful for zooming while filming because it has the continuous aperture control.

I need a bright lens at wide angles for indoors. I shoot mostly video at longer focal lengths so as long as it has IS I can make up the lost light with the GH3.
