What I found most interesting was that the reviewer (in the verdict section) said what I have been noticing in all pictures I have seen between these two cameras:
“But in my testing the Nikon Coolpix P7700 beat the Canon PowerShot G15 in both the outdoor real life resolution and high ISO noise tests.”
Since both of these cameras are basically designed to be outdoor travel cameras, (made for very low ISO shooting only) and the P7700 has that great 28-200mm reach, it seems like it has the edge in this category. Also, having that fully articulated LCD, in camera panorama mode, etc… makes it even more appealing for it's intended use. It sure seems like Canon really needs to do something very special, maybe start being more innovative for a change when the G16 arrives to stay competitive in this segment.

The smaller size of the G15 appealed to me and I don't need the longer zoom or the articulated LCD. I like Nikon colors, but if you tweak the Canon custom mode, it's basically a wash on IQ. And, it's nice to have a least some kind of viewfinder even if it's rudimentary.

yeah, in the right hands it really won't matter much.

Could you tell me which custom mode tweaks you have found effective?

That RX100 is a better buy maybe?! (at least in Europe)

Looking at the real world G15 samples and comparing with the RX100 samples, it seems like a no-brainer to me that in Europe (where the RX100 is cheaper than the G15) if you need one compact camera, it's got to be the RX100. Its IQ is a class above.

... unless I want a camera that is robust and won't suck dust bunnies into the guts of the camera when I put it into my jersey pocket on rides. This is why I finally decided to go with the G15 instead of the RX100. That, plus the fact that the G15 is $150 cheaper.
I also spent considerable time looking at RX100 images here, on Amazon, and elsewhere, and I have to say that on the whole I was not blown away by the camera's supposed super-IQ. Like usual, in the real world IQ depends as much on the photographer as the camera.

And what tells you that the G15 won't do that and the RX100 will?
Anyway, I was referring to European buyers. In the US where the G15 is cheaper, it's a closer call obviously.

The G15 can be had online for about £320-£330 delivered. (Mine cost me £329) Where can you get the RX100 cheaper?

320£??? That's a lot cheaper than what the G12 was so you will excuse me if I don't believe you. The question is where did you get it from?! Hopefully you're not talking about simplyelectronics.. Amazon.co.uk has it for 559£ and the cheapest you can find online is £499.

Although CameraLabs marked it down on IQ, the comparison shots on I-R don't bear that out IF you sharpen the G15's images. Basically, the G15 is softer at default, and the P7700 has more internal sharpening at default. So you can use internal sharpening on the G15; but the P7700 won't tolerate as much and begins to show sharpening artifacts very quickly.
The German review site www.chip.de/bestenlisten brings up a tabular listing of P&S cameras, and they list the G15 second to the G1X and well ahead of the P7700. THey show lots of data to support their ratings.

There are a multitude of sellers on auction sites selling them for £320, as well as OneStopDigital where I got mine. It's really not that hard to find.

This german website does not explain how they test, we even don't know if it is RAW or JPEG.
That's said the P7700 is ahead in term of definition at all ISO
On the camera labs web site in RAW it is clear the Nikon have a best IQ and there is no sharpening, this is the opposite I think the G15 cook the RAW from what I have seen on DPR sample

My S90 got those dust bunnies. It is too soon to know if the G15 has the dreaded lens error problem OR Canon's lens protector glass scratching issue.

I have a G11 and it has been bombproof. There is no reason to think that the G15 is any different.
I am not disparaging the RX100-- I thought about this for weeks and went back and forth on it. A bigger sensor is not to be lightly dismissed as an advantage. But if the camera isn't up to some abuse-- and there is ample evidence that the Sony has some problems in that direction-- then I am going with the more rugged of the two cameras. I'll take a bit of a hit on IQ-- a difference that will be inconsequential in most circumstances. (Again, my camera will spend a fair amount of time in my jersey pocket while I am riding my bike here and there).
As always, the final proof will be in the using. I'll check back in if there are any problems.

The Canon lens scratch issue is a complete myth as far as I can tell.

Good to see another cyclist out there. When you carry the camera in your jersey, how do you protect it from sweat?

I'm just amazed at the poor iso performance and lack of detail in the G15 vs the P7700 (see the noise results from CamLabs' review) http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon_PowerShot_G15/G15_noise.shtml
