I'm starting to hate canon (T2i with 40mm)
Nov 9, 2012

I picked up the 40mm for my T2i.

The second time I use it the focus locks up.

I was aware of this issue, so I went and downloaded the firmware, loaded it on a card and put it in my T2i.

The camera does not detect the firmware.

I go back and look at the release notes:
"Cameras that can be used for the firmware update: Canon EOS-1D X (*1), Canon EOS 5D Mark III (*1,*2), or Canon EOS Kiss X6i/REBEL T4i/650D  "

!!

I have an out-of-date firmware 40mm f2.8 and never have issue with it.  It only locks up when you manually push the AF motor against its will.  The remedy is to never do that as its not only a software lock-up issue, its typically a bad thing for many lenses to push the AF motor against its will.

All this means is manually set your lens to infinity when you store it away.

Sorry about that.  I just got one last weekend and really like it.  Your thread reminded me to update the firmware in mine (thx!).

Hope you don't have any issues.  Enjoy.

I've had zero trouble with mine so far (I have a 550D as well). I have to wonder what firmware it actually has. Anyway, I haven't tried pushing on it too much, just use it like I would any other lens. Hasn't stopped working.

It has become a little redundant to me now that I bought the Tamron 17-50 2.8, but I still like the size and reliable focus. Not sure whether to keep it as a handy spare or sell it. hmm.

Check your S/N.  If the third digit is a 1, then it is the old firmware.  If the third digit is anything else, then you are OK.

Nope, a 0, 1, or 2 means you have the older firmware (nt)

lol. Well, either way I'm yet to have any trouble with it. Maybe I'll try pushing on it a bit.

That doesn't mean that your T2i can't be USED with the updated lens, just that your T2i is incapable of performing the update.  Send the lens into Canon and get it updated for free.  You might give them a call and see if you can sweet-talk the rep into providing a free shipping label to avoid the shipping cost.

Good luck!
