Not necessarily. If you resized the RX100 images down to the G15's resolution, you see a sharper, cleaner image. Still, I say the RX100 could use a better lens as the one it has is rather soft as you near the edges and it rather pricey.

Sony's default is soft you have to bump up sharpness like a notch or two, which is good for post production. I haven't had any with problem with a soft lens and if you do send back to Sony. G15 looks a bit too sharp some of the objects look etched out I would take the sharpness down a couple of notches. Like those everyone says you can't go wrong with any of these cameras nowadays.

I think DPR got a bad RX100 out of those four I prefer the Nikon 7700 images that is just me though.

Except in the corners, I see more details in the RX100 shot in general, and less noise in the shades.

I agree with you Robert...just about all the cameras these days will produce very good images. The industry has matured to the point that if a camera will be rejected if it just can't cut it and there's too much money (and reputation) to be lost to have that.

We all know that sensor size matters.

So, to make it fair,

I decided to compare G15 ISO800 vs RX100 ISO1600 vs G1X ISO3200 JPEGs

from the center part of the image where cameras produce most amount of details.

To normalize output, and satisfy RX100 fanboys, I downsampled RX100 and G1X images to 12Mp in order to match G15's output.

Here are the results:

Sony RX100 ISO1600 JPEG

Sony RX100 ISO1600 JPEG resized to 12Mp

Canon G15 ISO800 JPEG

Canon G15 JPEG

Canon G1X ISO3200 JPEG

Canon G1X ISO3200 JPEG resized to 12Mp

As one can see G15 holds the ground very well against both large sensored compacts

with overall win by G1X in terms of details retained.

Okay, G1x is best then Sony lastly G15. Happy now? Sonys default is soft it needs a bump up or two on sharpness, old news.

Also, compare iso 800 to iso 800, etc..

Yes, Sony's JPEG is not world-class. If I bought RX100, I 'd use RAW only.

Therefore, I decided to take RAW samples to see how big is the difference.

Same ISO800 G15 vs ISO1600 RX100 vs ISO3200 G1X.

And again for all Sony fans RX100 and G1X samples are from the center of the image and downsized to 12Mp to match G15 output.

Canon G15 ISO800 RAW

Canon G15 ISO800 RAW

Sony RX100 ISO1600 RAW

Sony RX100 ISO1600 RAW downsampled to 12Mp

Canon G1X ISO3200 RAW

Canon G1X ISO3200 RAW downsampled to 12Mp

As one can see,

RAW brings Sony back on track thx to a 20+ Mp sensor providing IQ similar to G15 and may be even a tad sharper (do not forget that samples are not from the corners but center of the studio shot)

G1X has an overall win in terms of microcontrast, sharpness, and details.

Hello Dimitri,,,
In reply to Dimitri Khoz, Nov 8, 2012

we had some fights in the past as you remember....finally, i got myself a G15, thank you, it's a great camera, details at base iso is amazing...however, as you increase iso, details are gone, head to head with Xz-1,,,,,yesterday night, RX100 arrived as well....i just played with both cam in my living room and took some shots of my mom...i can honestly tell you that, photos from Rx100 is always remarkably better than G15 whatever settings you can use...however, RX100 MFD is a paing comparing to G15....G15 macro capability is undoubtly superior to RX100.

Listen Brother,

G1X wins in image quality you are right but that is about it. But overall, image quality and performance the best pocket p&s you can have is the RX100, ask somebody. Don't get stuck on a company. For example I have several L lenses and Canon dslrs (for years) but I am looking at a Fuji XE1 right now I like the direction they are going so my money is going there. I did an event recently and took the RX100 just for the hell of it and my client really liked the RX100 images. It could be the fact the camera is just less intimidating or what have you. Also, I like the Sony skin tones over the Canons take another look, too red.

Also, when you compare iso's use all of the cameras at the same number stop trying to side step  and do one at 800 the other at 1600 etc. you seem crazy when you do.

All, in all these all are fine cameras.

Lol,

RX1 is a niche camera that will lose to G1X in all categories: price, compactness, usability, IQ.

Non collapsable fixed lens without IS that requires F5.6+ at 35mm to get nice picture without background blurr.

No thanks.

I can sense the jealousy already...have you looked at the shots from the RX1?...unbelievable IQ and those are pre-production shots!...going to absolutely smoke the G1X and a few other Canon's in the process...

I think RX 1 can win on the performance.

Because G1X performance are Not good enough. I hope Canon try to fix this problems

Need Better IQ on High ISO Re: Hello Dimitri,,,
In reply to ijustloveshooting, Nov 9, 2012

I think Canon need to improve the High ISO IQ.

On Low ISO the image is good enough, but on ISO 3200 many people say not good enough.

I hope canon try to fix this

G15 has better lens. so for same condition they can use Lower ISO.

so comparing on same ISO maybe Not a good ideas

At what cost? Would you pay for that minor extra performance overall in only some key areas?

G1X needs better AF and macro performance, otherwise a very solid camera especially for the price. Maybe the G2X will address both maybe not, either way, a heck of a good deal.

The G15 certainly has a faster lens than the G1X, but it's not necessarily better optically.

Yes, I know that G1X win on the bigger sensor.

But the lens is slower and also the performance is not good enough

I do appreciate that English may not be your first language but maybe it would help us understand better if could describe what you mean by 'the performance is not good enough'?

Do you mean optical performance?  Image quality?  Close focus ability? AF speed?  Shot to shot times? Size?  Or perhaps there's something else?
