The sole function of a database is to store and retrieve information. It has no other function.

Database programs usually let you do some stuff with the stored information so you don't get bored.

The purpose of Lightroom is to process images and videos and do useful (or frivolous) things with them.

Lightroom uses a database to help it do these other frivolous (or useful) things.

It isn't itself, a database.
