FIXED!!!!   one of my batteries had a terminal blocked. I fixed the battery and marked it as "RUBBISH" . on the camera, the male connector was bent. I remember that when i placed the battery in the 5D, i never felt any pressure. I managed to bent back the plate with a screwdriver and fixed two of them, the other snaped.  Where can I get a spare part. I got the address of a place in chile to have them replace it for undeo 100 dlls. Perhaps if i buy the part I can buy 3 for a better deal.

Any one knows where.   AND PLEASE!!!  point me to the right direction instead of sayng dumb dumb dumb bhla blha...who does that and why you did it.

Thank you

Glad you got the problem identified and on the way to being fixed.

However you do realize this site has people from many countries.  You seem to think all those who upset you were from the U.S. but if you go through and look they were from a number of places around the world (click on their screen names and pull up their profiles).  Several from the US even stuck up for you and a good number did try to help.

I was joking.  the concept of "forum justice" reminded me of "freeway justice", where the dude tailgating you roars past at mach 2 the moment you pull over, only to get nailed by the cops a quarter mile up the road...

It's tough to sympathize but at the same time try to not come off as harsh. I know I've done some bonehead things in my life. It's a bizarre situation so it's hard to believe and yet somehow want to give the OP the benefit of the doubt. In either case, it's a shame that someone would (if true) risk so many thousands of dollars worth of equipment on a once in a lifetime excursion by saving a few measly bucks on a few batteries. Maybe testing out the equipment before heading out on the trip of a lifetime would have been prudent too?

But I also offered real advice and that's to do nothing with the dead cameras and shoot with the remaining one assuming he brought chargers and can continue to use the original canon batteries. And do not let some camera shop potentially ruin your cameras worse then they are already even though you're ready to chance it. Did you get the OK from your company that bought these? Can the company send your parts or fed/ex new bodies?

I sort of suspected so.

Though, it seems like a good tagline for an action movie.  Hmmm, Sly is too old, Arnie is retired and even Bruce is getting long in the tooth.  Who can deal out forum justice?

Hi,

I'm glad too that you got the problem sorted. As for the ones who got on your back about joining the forum and posting a help request, there was no need for it. Many people read a forum but don't post until they need help. Ignore the nasty people, there are many on here who will help without any ill feeling towards new people, everyone has to learn. In fact, you have informed people of a potential problem with cheap batteries, something to look out for in the future.

Finally, a flame suit is required equipment on here along with a pretty stout tripod. Don't get dragged into petty arguments and you'll be ok, be as good as the best and better than the rest.

Surely it can only be too high in voltage, I always stick my meter on new batteries for what ever they are intended for just in case. I have purchased many after market batteries and never had a problem.

What do you mean "a terminal was blocked" in such a way that it bent the pin? And what is the brand of the battery?

So you are saying it is true, it took you destroying 3 cameras with a single battery (you say that the other batteries are ok and it was only one that could destroy a camera) to figure out it was the battery. So after breaking one camera, you insert the battery in another camera and it breaks, at this point I would still have sympathy for you because although dumb, I think the average person that may not have clue about cameras may ruin 2 cameras, but then you do it one more time to make sure it breaks another camera. Sorry, I could not believe it, I guess now I do. I don't care if you were European, American, African, Russian, Chinese. I think that was way beyond stupid it was dumb (stupid being ignorant, dumb being you have had experience yet you repeat the same mistake... in your case twice). So don't feel like I was calling you dumb because you weren't American. I would call an American dumb for doing that too. If I were born in another country.. I would call you dumb.

What bothers me, is after you figured out you were dumb, you deflected and tried to make this an American thing and blame Americans for you being dumb and all Americans are bad and persecute you because you are not from America. Sorry, anyone from any country looking at what you did would think you are dumb, not just Americans.

Now, I am really happy for you that figured out the problem and fixed 2 of the cameras and it looks like the 3rd will be an easy fix. I am glad being dumb will not cost you $10,500.

So my hope for you is this, that you will learn from this experience and become smart, because if you repeat this error again, you will be even dumber.

This not exactly right. After he destroyed camera #3, he recharged his Canon battery and used it to get camera #3 working again. Then destroyed camera #3 a 2nd time with the same bad battery.

even stranger
In reply to Richard, Oct 27, 2012

If a COMPANY purchased 4 Canon 5dIII's, then it must be a pro photo shoot, documentary, or similar. No one person needs four. This same company that buys $14000 worth of cameras doesn't buy legitimate accessories? And the photographer they hire doesn't know enough to check his equipment before his leaves?

Then the story gets stranger. A camera shop in the middle of nowhere is willing to do the repairs, but only if they get a magic parts that no one here has ever heard of. They can't get the part themselves, but they can repair the camera???? And he's going to find the part, get it shipped out, get it to this mystery shop, and have the cameras repaired in what? A couple of weeks at best?

Then, I've never heard a camera being damaged by a non-OEM battery in this fashion. Stories yes, but no hard evidence, so if it happens it has to be rare. Batteries can explode. They can leak. They can have short lives, go dead. But to blow a fuse they would have to have way too much voltage, which is chemically impossible--a battery cannot fail with the voltage going high. I guess the battery could have been factory miswired, providing a negative 7.2 volts, but then how could it charge sucessfully?

However, in the spirit of being helpful, there is this link.

You come here, create a new account and have only one post, then tell us after putting a 3rd party battery in 1 camera, you killed it, then you put it in another just to test it and it killed it. That is pretty dumb but possible then you tell us you stick it in a 3rd camera just to make sure this 3rd party battery will absolutely with no doubt blow up another camera, and it did. Not buying it. If you had some history or blew up one camera, I might believe it. I have bought 3rd party canon batteries before with no issues. If you wer really dumb enough to blow 3 of your 4 cameras knowing the battery was the culprit, I find it hard to believe.

Canondog wrote:

Hi there. Im traveling outside the US and I have an ugly problem. My company purchased 4 5D mk iii and 3 of them are dead! This is a once in a life time situation.

This is what happened. I purchased several 3rd party batteries online and took them with me last week. I charge them and kept them as backups. Yesterday I was using my last original Canon battery, and when I plugged this 7.4v 2600 mAh LP-E6, the camera went dead. it seemed strange to me so I plugged the same in the other camera and it did not turn on. I then charged an original and it did not work on the first two 5ds except on the 3rd. once i drained that battery, I plugged the 3rd party battery and the camera, flipped the switch, and ir turned on for a split second and then it died.

I have a feeling that a fuse or something is dead. I went to a camera shop and they advised me to call Canon, when I called Canon, I was told that it can only be serviced in the USA. the closest place where it can be fixed is 100's of miles away. Im in Patagonia and I need to find a fix for this.

The camera shop here told me that if i can get the fuse ( in case that thats the problem) they will replace it. Thats a risk im willing to take.

ANY ADVICE OUT THERE!!!!

Also, if I can get a link to where I can buy this part it will help me a lot.

Yes, and he makes the point in the original post that he is traveling "outside the US", as if that is significant.  Seems to imply that he is normally inside the US?  And then when people from multiple countries point out that he is an idiot, he starts with the anti-American tirade.

LOL.  I can't decide whether "dumb, dumb, dumb" or "troll, troll, troll".  Guess I'll stick with troll.

But what an idiot!

No offense intended, of course.  Just trying to accurately analyze the problem.
