Samsung NX200 lenses 18-200 or 50-200mm?
Oct 25, 2012

I have recently bought an NX200 that came with a 20-50 kit lens. I am travelling overseas and want more zoom than this lens provides. I would like to have only one lens that will cover all photo opportunities. I would love to buy the 18-200mm lens but it is so expensive compared to the 50-200mm lens. Will the 50-200mm lens provide enough versatility? And I would have to stand further back from the subject as I would be "starting" at 50mm wouldn't I?

I own the 50-200 and it is a terrific lens. I highly recommend it. You are correct about having to move back some if you want a similar view from a wider lens.

Here's one example from it.

I was undecided over this last year (there's a thread on this forum about it somewhere) and ended up buying the 18-200. I'm very happy with it, and find it very convenient not to change lenses, but to be honest the 50-200 is probably the more "sensible" choice, as long as you're happy to change lenses when necessary. It depends a lot on the price difference - not sure where you are in the world and how much you find the 18-200 listed for? I was in the UK and bought it on Amazon germany - saved about 25% of the UK price.

I'm currently travelling with the 18-200, 30mm and 16mm - when I get back I'll try and post some more thoughts about how I'm getting on with them.

As the previous poster has said, the 50-200mm is prolly more sensible. I also purchased the 18-200mm ,but only when it went on sale for $599. The 50-200mm can often be got for a very reasonable $200 or less on sale. After reading the board members experiences for some time now, it seems the 50-200mm is better in image quality, but im a beginner so I wouldnt see much difference.

Samsung market the 18-200 as the 'movie' lens for its use of quieter zoom motor inside. As far as size you can compare the differences on the the home page here for Sumsung lenses. What I can say is, the 18-200mm certainly gave me reason to consider crafting my own leather camera case to increase the thickness of the nx200 body. So as to make it more comfortable for me to hold the combo (check my threads on leather camera case :)). On the svelte nx200, that thing is large.

For a beginner like me and for the price I got it, its a great lens.

I originally purchased the 50-200 but found it bothersome to be always changing the lenses and also found that I frequently needed the sensor cleaned because of changing lenses so often.  So I purchased the 18-200 and then sold the 50-200.  I have never regretted the money I spent and this lens is on the camera most of the time.  I also have the 30mm (which I rarely use), the 60mm (which I LOVE) and the 18-55 which has never been on my camera.

While travelling many of your photos will be of landscape and you will be frustrated with the 55-200 lens.

Your only choice to have 1 lens for all opportunities is the 18-200, that is what the lens is for  It won't cover everything (not great in low light), but is designed to cover as much as possible.  If you get the 50-200 you will be swapping with your 20-50 mm on a regular basis.

I would love to buy the 18-200mm lens but it is so expensive compared to the 50-200mm lens. Will the 50-200mm lens provide enough versatility? And I would have to stand further back from the subject as I would be "starting" at 50mm wouldn't I?

Depends on what you photograph, but 50 mm is a tight field of view.  I find 30 mm too tight for general shots at times.

So for what you want, the 18-200 is, I think, the right choice.  If it isn't in your budget the 50-200 mm will be fine, but you will have to switch between it and your 20-50 mm.  The 20-50 mm when you are in tighter locations, and maybe switch to the 50-200 when you are out in more open areas.

Image quality wise the 18-200 mm isn't the best lens in the world, but the flexibility of zoom range is very handy.

Shorter zooms have less compromises. The 55-200 works well for me.

You can look at the photozone review of the 18-200 lens here:

I would suggest not looking at reviews for that kind of lens.  For real world, most people the lens does just fine.

Take for example the $1000 Nikkor 28-300 mm VR for full frame, it got a 1.5 to 2 on Photozone too, but if you need that type of lens, you need that type of lens.

I agree with you, Eric. If we need a 18-200 lens then that's what we get from Samsung.

Interestingly according to Photozone the Sony 18-200 is better than the Sony 55-210:

http://www.photozone.de/sony_nex/729-sony55210f4563nex?start=2

A good 18-200 lens on a NX200 would be an ideal travel camera for me.

I have bought this lens but returned and bought for nearly the same money a Nikon P7700.

Maybe I will buy a 50-200 for my NX200.

budget and performance, the 55-200 would be the best choice. besides, the 20-50 is very compact that it would allow you to carry it whenever you need it. I'd say personally that you would be shooting more with the 20-50 during your travels and occasionally use the 50-200 when you need to. save yourself the extra $400.

I have just bought 18-200mm from Slovakia. For some reason the lenses are very cheap there. You can find them for around €250 and some retailers are happy to post abroad. I wasn't interested in buying these lenses but for that price I couldn't refused. Initial impressions are quite positive but the corners at the long range seem to be a bit softer then 50-200mm.

Actually, with the price differences of the 50-200 and 18-200, could just get another body

i myself have 2 nx body, 1 with 50-200mm, another with 18-55mm or any pancake for keeping small.
