Edges issue with FZ150..
Oct 10, 2012

Hi, I took some pictures at my son's birthday and with big surprise I see

some bad edges in the faces or in objects, like small zig zag contours.

The problem is a bit avoided expanding the pics to 100% but when I see them in a smaller format using Faststone Viewer they are very evident.

Pictures are taken in RAW with -2 in noise reduction and all the rest at 0 and in P mode "standard" colours.

The light was fine, most of these pics are below 400 ISO and no flash.

Before posting some examples I would like to know if this is known and what is the workaround?

Thanks in advance

Have you looked at the jpegs that came out with the raws?

I hope you are doing jpeg + raw !

The jpegs are probably just fine.

Have you tried a different PP application, if you don't have jpegs? This sounds like some sort of PP problem.

If you are really a beginner - why fool around with "raw"?

Raw is basically for people who are trying to wring as much as possible from their photos, and even then in 90% of cases, there is no improvement. The panasonic engineers have gone to a lot of trouble to produce a good Jpeg image - among other things, the unavoidable distortions in the lens are corrected at every zoom stage, for that zoom stage, the distortions vary from wide to tele, through 20 some stages, each with different optical issues.

Could be the Fastone Viewer.  As mentioned, some PP programs have issues with displaying Raw files properly- I have this problem with the zig zagging and pixelation with Raw from a Sony A57 in Aftershot Pro, but not on my Panasonic FZ50 Raw or FZ150 RW2 in same program.

Try Silkypix that came with the camera on CD-

Post the original pic for us to see. It could be your computer video card. Shooting people at wide angle can create distortion in faces near the edge.

As Erik says the jpeg already has the built software correcton designed by panny, the raw may not depending on the converter.

I actually shoot RAW only and in Faststone not all the pics look like that.

I must say that those which are the worst are in a wide angle or in very low zooming.

The thing is that I converted some of them to JPeg and still can see this edge issue.

I can open also the raw one in Light Room 4.2

You asked me to post examples, how? resized, cropped, original size?

Let me know and I will upload some..

Thanks

You could take a 'screenshot' (print screen) of the problem file as you see it and save it as a jpeg, then upload that to a free gallery here. You could also upload a raw conversion from lightroom at default settings. I think you have to enable 'originals' in your gallery so we can look at it.

You can see the edge of the table and metal foot behind...

Another question for you is: does the FZ150 "underexpose" a bit with standard settings in P-mode?

The only thing I changed is that NR is at -2. It seems that it's underexposing a bit even when light behind the cam.

The only way to get the right pic sometimes is to use bracketing option.

Anyone can confirm this underexposing tendency?

ok, is that a screen shot from your computer as viewed in Fastone viewer? Are you seeing that in Lightroom as well? to me it looks like 'jaggies' caused by the computer screen/video card.

Are you seeing that in print as well?

Hi, thanks

No I do not see that in LightRoom or in printing.

It's only with RAW. When I enlarge them to "actual pixes" the issue is gone.

I like FS a lot, but this is a bad thing.
