SX50 macro-shots...
4

Apologies in advance to those who are sick of hearing about the SX50 and how good it is/isn't...

Here are a couple of shots from earlier this morning. Technically they're not macro shots, as they were both taken with various amounts of zoom (the blue fly at full 50x zoom).

The images have been cropped and re-sized down about 50% and had a bit of sharpening.

SX50 50x zoom: Bluebottle on avocado flower

SX50 5x (?) zoom: Greenbottle on daisy

Re: SX50 macro-shots...

Thanks, they came out better than I expected...

A minor correction though - the bluebottle was taken at 10x zoom, not 50x as I said in the post...

it's impressive that you can focus on a very tiny subject with a very close distance at 50X zoom...that's really impressive....image also look very nice,,,, thanks for sharing,,,,

That one was actually at around 10x zoom - see my correction, above

This one was at full 50x optical zoom. It's focused quickly and without fuss - noticeably better than the SX40:

SX50 full 50x zoom, crop & 50% resize, distance to subject around 5m

Re: SX50 macro-shots...

Here are another couple of 'close-up' shots, using the zoom of the SX50, rather than any ability of mine to get ultra-close to small insects!

These flies have been supping nectar from the flowers of our avocado tree and then resting on the garden fence, which is a great place to shot them, as it doesn't move around like the tree blossom.

The first was taken at 50x zoom, the second (according to the original EXIF data) at a focal length of 17mm - whatever that translates to in optical magnification.

SX50, 50x zoom. Image cropped and resized 50%.

SX50, 17mm focal length, 100% crop.

Very good shots! As I'm fascinating by insects, your shots  are an important incentive to upgrade from my P510 to SX50!

Moreover, I think you founded a new photo branch beside birding: INSECTING !

Happy SX50 shooting,

Augustin

Yes, the SX50 focuses closer than the P510 and does a good job.  May not need to use the Raynox as much.  Would be interesting to see the SX50 plus Raynox.

Here's some of the P510 plus Raynox 150.

Re: SX50 macro-shots...

They certainly make interesting subjects!

The IS of the SX50 does an excellent job and the reach of the zoom makes it possible to take some very passable shots of insects.

All of the flies in my shots were around 10-12mm in length and most of the time the SX50 managed to focus pretty-much spot-on.

Cheers,

Mike.

Re: SX50 macro-shots...

Very nice!

At first, I thought you were showing us one of your FZ200 shots..and I couldnt work out if it was stock or with add-on lens.  Then I saw the exif..

This is really impressive coming from the SX50.

Thanks
