Sony A99 ISO6400 RAW files look spectacular....
Oct 5, 2012

I've been working with several high ISO RAW images and I have to say that I am very impressed with what the A99 files have to offer. From what I've seen, the ISO6400 are substantially better than the Pentax K-5 at the same sensitivity.

Full size image can be seen here

Keep in mind that this image was processed with default settings, and that output will likely improved with discrete processing.

Since you used +1.3 EV the true iso is only about 2800 or so.

I know I should not comment this, but I really hope that Ma55l will be able to make an analysis some day -- good for him and better for us!

Except if this was needed to compensate for reflective light metering error, which I doubt.

Looks like aggressive NR applied to it. Perhaps this is a better ISI 6400 sample:

PS.  I've since updated the image.

As it turns out, the full size link isn't working as intended.

Hi tbcass,
To my knowledge, ev adjustments has no impact on ISO values.
that being said, I'd also add that this image was slightly underexposed also. And so I can't claim that it was shot to the right either.

On my program, histogram looks perfectly fine. I don't know what you mean.

No it is not a better high ISO shot because it was shot @f8.

This would never be a "real life" high ISO condition. Using high ISo is for a reason! I usually need ISO6400 at a volleyball game where I have to shoot with my lens wide open (f2.8) and a shutter speed that is just about enough to freeze the action. Once I have reached my "limit" with aperture and speed only then do I increase the ISO.

If I can use an aperture of f8@ 6400 I would be much better off to shoot @ f2.8 and an ISO of in the range of ISO800 which comes to about the same.

Most of the high ISO shots posted so far are NOT real life scenarios as most of them use higher f stops.

Stef.

Consider this:

If you look at the DOF effect of the actual subject(not the mirror reflection), you will find that it is very carefully rendered with respect to the reflection in the mirror. Therefore, if we take the subject distance and DOF effect into consideration we end up with a very real scenario.

That being said, I'd also point-out that this doesn't mean you own high ISO needs aren't valid either(as I'm sure they are). Though it does help demonstrate that there is much more to photography in terms of needs and circumstances. And one way that I've found to help appreciate that is to try and replicate someone else work. ie. this particular portrait setup becomes a good example of what it can take to get the shot. To which I'd add, may not always be apparent.

Hope this helps.

PS. I've shot many portraits at ISO6400 myself, though I'd try and avoid it based on the amount of work needed to make the images usable afterward.

Hi tbcass,
To my knowledge, ev adjustments has no impact on ISO values.

Noise is mainly caused by a lack of light, not by the actual ISO setting.

If you take a photo at ISO 3200 with no exposure compensation, and another photo at ISO 6400 with +1 EV exposure compensation, they will get the same amount of light and the same noise once they have been adjusted to the same light level in PP.

In my opinion it is ridiculous to compare noise at the same ISO setting on different cameras with different light metering and different ISO norm. What we should compare is noise at the same amount of light (same scene lightiing, same aperture and same shutter time).

I'd say this works best when EV compensation results in exposing to the right. However since this image is underexposed, I'm thinking this wasn't the case here.

Though I do agree on the issue of having more light in a scene by stopping down. And though this may have been a possibility, I'd again lean on the fact that the scene was underexposed as an indicator that it was likely a legitimate setup.

That being said, there is one other ISO6400 images in the set without EV compensation showing the same amount of noise. And so I'm guessing that were looking at a legitimate noise performance examples in this case.

With this composition a compensation for the metering system is needed.

Luminance EV of the scene is -2,44, exposure 1/80s at f1.8. Thats very low light.

Made a version with some more tuning in LR and adjusting contrast and the tonal curve in PS. Finally I added some glow to compensate for the hard contrast of the ZA 135.
